One of those things which just does your head in.

If you calculate the size of the "Whole" triangle, (Top triangle of the two), using 1 mtr per square, the total is 32.5, however if you calculate the individual coloured triangles, its comes to 32, and the burning question is, in the 2nd triangle, WHERE HAS THE HOLE GONE

My head hurts.

P.S. Probably wrong forum as well, mine usually are.

The angles are slightly different.

The area of a right triangle is computed by multiplying the base times the height and dividing by two. The pieces of the puzzle have an area of 32 square units. Although they can be assembled to form what appears to be a 13×5 right triangle, they actually form quadrilaterals that are slightly smaller or slightly bigger than a 13×5 right triangle.

The top figure has an area of 32 square units. The bottom figure, including the empty square, has an area of 33 square units. A real 13×5 right triangle would have an area of 32.5 square units. The distortion is difficult to see because one square of the picture is approximately 3% of the area.

If you print this out, and cut out the bits from the top, they fix exactly the bottom, except for the hole, I am thinking about the answers so far,....

I thought it was a good film, esp the bit where the "robots" have a funeral

It's easier to see if the missing piece is a larger percentage of the overall area:

As someone said above (more succinctly than me), look at the angles.

I liked the bit where Maximillian disemboweled the bad guy.

Well I made a cut out in A3 paper, carefully drew the triangles, cut them out and rearranged them, still a HOLE? and the dimensions are still 13 x 5 ?????

Make 2 sets and overlay them.

the key is that the triangles have different angles. The big one is 2.6667 times longer than high and the small one is 2.5 times longer than high.

This is why one arrangement is bigger than the other, hence why there is space for a missing square.

Well, as it was made at the tail end of the 70's, the ending is a metaphor for excessive hallucinogenic abuse. The professor and Maximillian becoming inseparable, like drug user addicted to a drug and ending up in hell, while the others all go to a 24 hour garage on a a snack binge.

It's, like, really profound.

Don't remember the ending really, just the disemboweling. And there was a sad part when one of the good robots died wasn't there?
Seemed pretty magical stuff as a kid.

big spaceship buggers off into the black hole, little spaceships with the "goodies" on board escapes, vincent survives, his beaten up "twin" bites the bullet I think.

Maximillian and the mental doctor chap get "joined" together, you see maximillian floating through space, zoom in to see the doctors eyes blinking away though max's visor thing.

all very odd.

Off topic much?

I was getting confused and then worked out you lot were on about a completely different film. I was thinking of Huey, Duey and Louie on the Valley Forge walking around with their little trowels, doing a spot of gardening.
