As you would expect, the world's tallest fountain is in Dubai. As you would expect, it's next to the world's tallest building. And as you would expect, it's as naff as everything else in there.

The Dubai Fountain—which was recently finished by the Burj Dubai—can reach 492 feet up in the air.

It was built for $217 million by WET Design, which is the same company that created the one at the Bellagio Hotel, in Las Vegas. The 900-foot long water show uses 6,600 lights, 50 colored projectors, and hundreds of servos, all computer controlled and synchronized with music to offer some of the most sophisticated water entertainment since Zeus decided to impregnate Danaë.

That's some fairly impressive squirting action!

Naff? Naff? If only the British government could do things as successfully as the UAE lot. maybe the Millenium Dome wouldn't have been such a carbuncle?

What measure of success are you using; the ability to spooge teeth-itchingly large wodges of cash on things like this, where the pointlessness is only exceeded by the tastelessness? On balance, I'd rather have something useful, like a Severn barrier or a pair of equipped aircraft carriers, rather than an ugly tall building whose sole purpose is to enable crown prince whotsit to get his jollies.

But you're right; the currrent iteration of HM government is indeed crap.

Of course, the government will ensure that this will be a hitch-free process.

Success.. They do build the biggest building. They have built islands off the coast. They have built huge marinas. They are planning so they have an infrastructure when the oil money goes. I worked in the UAE for 5 years. Trust me, the Arabs there certainly have vision.

Well, pretty much everyone else does the designing and building for them, but they are very skilled at writing cheques thanks to OPEC constantly forcing the price of their only export up. So at least every time you fill up you contribute a little to these willy-waving projects. wink

Willy waving aside as an art installation it sure has some imagination... and engineering behind it.

All credit to the designers and installers.

Hmm, I've had another look and it still does nothing for me; impressive engineering for sure, but watching it just makes me want to take a piss...
