Now I have noticed it , it's driving me mad . Got me screaming at the TV and radio. Used a lot on Radio. In the past few days.

Iconic football goals
Iconic jacket !
Iconic music
Iconic dish , relating to food
I just heard series 20 of the apprentice being advised, the Iconic show it was described.
Iconic cars
Iconic film

The worst from today , a pottery program, an Iconic clay , no vase , but the clay.

Usually used when someone is desperate to sell something. It's an alternative version of "eBay rare".

Iconic Auctions.

I'm not sure that iconic is *that* overused in car circles, well not as much as in other spheres, as mentioned.

Which cars are truly iconic then?

Series 1 LR
Various Ferraris (250gto, F40 etc)
McLaren F1
...

I've enough pet peeves to start a zoo, but this is one that particularly peeves me. I think that this usage of 'iconic' should be reserved for referring to people/things of the status of Madonna (the original and the pop star), Elvis, the Eiffel Tower etc; things that are clearly going to be universally recognised and still talked about by future generations. When it comes to cars there are very, very few. In fact I'd say possibly only Landies with the classic Landy shape and the Beetle. Maybe the F40. But just because a few car nerds get tumescent over a picture of an old BMW Ewhatever does not make it 'iconic', and it certainly doesn't apply to a meal deal or a pressure washer.

Here's the iconic image of Terry Butcher, during his heroic footballing performance against Sweden in 1989.

To be fair, he was heroically bucking the trend of rolling on the floor pretending to be hurt.

"An icon is a picture, symbol, or person representing something greater, like a religious figure (e.g., Jesus in Eastern Christianity), a cultural ideal (e.g., Marilyn Monroe), or a computer function (e.g., a folder on your desktop). Essentially, it's a powerful visual representation that stands for an object, idea, or person through resemblance, analogy, or deep cultural meaning, acting as a shortcut for complex concepts. "

An icon is a visual representation of the thing you are worshiping.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iconoclasm

So it's all misused now.
Lazy copying of another person's language, without English GSCE.

Bit like " trope", "yourself" and all the other literary guff that's misused.

I can live with the Icons and Iconic

However a single ‘methinks’ in a thread makes my toes curl with cringe.
