In my life time if you asked me to name the popes I’d get

John Paul II
Benedict
Frances

But was totally unaware of the latest one, or that he was even American until the current news stories. He’s been in role a year, does he have a bad publicist or is this just me that’s missed it?

I’m not a religious man, but the pope’s always been an icon of sorts

Before John Paul II, there was of course the sadly very short reign of John Paul (I)

I hadn’t actually realised that was an “of course” & the John Paul’s were consecutive popes, eg I knew they reused names & there’d been loads of Benedict’s .

He's if anything one of the more outspoken Pope's, generally at odds with Trump and the rest of his ilk, cares about the poor the sick, needy etc as you'd expect. Very anti-war "there is no Holy war, only Holy Peace" Called for Bishops to use firm, transparent action to address sexual abuse cases and for the Church to be made "restless by history" acknowledging it's past failings.

Honestly, I think his anti-Trump stance keeps him at odds with a lot of the big media places and the moderate ones don't always play well with the Catholic Church.

Trump is currently sharing images of himself as Jesus (no, really) which is making the press on both sides for obvious reasons.

His middle name is Francis, why didn't he just run with that if he didn't want to be Pope Rab?

If you had asked me to name a pope, I might have got Benedict, reading this thread, it feels familiar. Others, not a chance.
