Your best option is to wait until the temperature is higher and the brake releases. If you cant you'll have to adopt the drop the handbrake lever and drive up and down the road / drive with the brake on until the friction heats the brakes enough to release them method. It's harsh and not a great idea but that's life.

This has happened on both ocassions I have driven my van over the xmas period$
My usual method is to gently reverse. This always usually frees the hand brake

Once the car is properly warmed up and the heater etc is on full it may come off on its own?

Well surely it's not frozen on then. But a good old fashioned stuck calliper.

If the pads on fire, the disks glowing, I can't see there being much ice in/on the calliper.

have you tried the "handbrake lever down then backwards-forwards-backwards-forwards" method?

One assumes it's got water in the actual cable then. Hairdryer on the cable would appear to be the best option and then replace the cable for one that hasn't got a split outer.

It's the handbrake cable which is frozen on there us two inches of free play and I've spend ten mins yanking it as hard as I could.

Rac on their way out 75min wait minimum then off to kwikfit for a new handbrake cable or whatever is needed

tell me about it and what's the betting kwikfit don't have a handbrake cable for an N reg Volvo 460. Oh it's year end too today. Happy days

probably caused some damage to the pad and disc but I only drove at 20mph and as soon as I saw smoke I pulled over car left in gear.

Need a new cable I guess otherwise same problem every day of the week.

The cables are originals so 14 odd years old. Guess part of bangeromics is only replace a part when it's broken rather than preventative.

Guess handbrake cables should last 7 years then rip them off. Never have that problem again

I feel your pain, I'm waiting for the AA, car won't start (seams like it's the battery but it's at 11.9v)

Kettle of hot water over the drums, once released drive along with the handbrake on the first click to heat the drum up and evaporate the damp.

Not just me then. Wifes 307 started doing this last winter. Always leave the handbrake off if it's going to freeze. Lucky we've got a level bit of drive to park it on. If only every car was as reliable as my old TVR. hehe

Likewise for second day in a row. At least Renault have now decided that battery is under warranty.

Had the same problem with the Saab, only way I could release mine was by driving it for a while. It stank but eventually released. I have not used the Handbreak since.
