I am currently using them and have done so for about three years. I like them better than the standard type because they are very quick to fit. They are very quick, if not The quickest and easiest to fit due to locking into mounting plate and are self centering. Some cars cannot use the standard wrap around chains due to limited clearance on the rear of the wheel so will have to use this type. They are also OK for use with alloys because the chain is only in contact with tyre tread and not on the side walls. A disadvantage is that they are expensive and you need to fit the mounting plate before hand eg at the onset of winter. Its not pretty thing IMHO! Another disadvantage is they are bit bulky and fill the boot up. The chains are great in use though and it makes sense for me as snow is more or less guaranteed and I live a mountainous region, Alps. They have got me home a few times.

I watched one fall off the front of an Alfa I was following in Tignes once.

Not saying they are a bad idea, he might have made a bugger of fitting them.

They cant/shouldn't fall off if mounted correctly. They fit onto a mounting plate bayonet style with a locking mechanism.
