modern corrado replacement?

A little what car thread for you to ponder for me.
Im looking to swap my corrado vr6 for something more modern.
I love the torque of the 2.9 v6, and the size of the car was just about big enough with the seats down and the hatch back it can take a mountain bike.
I also love the relatively sharp handling.
I do mostly town driving, with an occasional jaunt up to the black mountains.
I only have a budget of 3-4k. I don't do many miles so MPG is not an issue. Nor is insurance. It just needs to be reliable and not need to maintenance, nor have too many "common faults" which drive me mad.
I would prefer at least a 2+2 for very occasional lifts. Im not bothered about fwd or rwd as I do mostly town driving , not at 9/10ths.
So my wish list in order is.
Under £4.5k,
Reliable,
Handles well,
torque
Not more than 10 years old (ish)
Hatch back
2+2 seats.
So far im thinking, Octavia vrs, clio 172/182, fabia vrs, bmw 328, MX5 mk1 1.8 for weekends and a cheap reliable ford focus for daily use.
Any other ideas for reliable daily that wont be snooze inducing.

judging by your current ponderings you don't actually can a replacement but something different? I say this because I wouldn't really consider any of them similar to a V6 Corrado.A little what car thread for you to ponder for me.

I suppose what would be handy to know is. Why do you want to change? What is it that the Corrado isn't doing right?
And to further this, what is it you actually want from a new car?
An MGZS180 would do the V6 thing with good handling and newer quite well. You are also not far of MGZT260 or Rover 75 V8 money if you want torque.
3.0 V6 X-Type would also be nippy solid and grunty and the Mondeo ST220.
None are coupes though.
DC2 ITR would be one to consider from a driving dynamics point of view. But they are all getting on a bit now.
Late model Prelude or JDM import one might be worth a look too for a coupe.
Mazda RX-8's are also this money these days too. Apart from the mpg I think they are fine cars.
A V6 Golf would also be an obvious option too.

Audi TT 225 is what I went to after a corrado VR6.
Sold mine in feb (1999 100k miles, mint) for £4.6k.
Better handling, better on fuel, faster, more comfortable (air con, heated leather) and will still take a bike in the back (plus I had the audi roof bars).
I went from a Corrado VR6 to a TT225 about 10 years ago. I agree with the above except the handling. I found the TT to be a major dissappointment in the twisties after the Corrado.Sold mine in feb (1999 100k miles, mint) for £4.6k.

Keep the Corrado.

Leon Cupra R first sprung to mind..
For 4.5K?http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2247049.htm

V6 Golf seems the most obvious answer (V6 A3's & R32s over budget) but how about:
325 Compact?

Or an Alfa GT? (prob 2.0JTS for your budget).
I prefer something with a boot for transporting my bike personally - with both wheels removed it's secure from prying eyes when I want to park up somewhere, confined in case of an accident & leaves the rest of the cab free and clean. E46 coupes & I'm pretty sure 406 V6 coupes (v.cheap) both have folding rear seats too.

the corrado does its job very well, i just wish it was 5/10 years newer.
its getting the stage where running costs are increasing in order to keep it in good order and to do preventative work. this is also not helping me save up the extra few grand to get something really worth while, like a 350z/evo7/boxter s.
so at the moment id like somethin i can just service once a year and enjoy. i contemplated a TT but my A3 put me off audi handling and they arnt as niggle free as id like for the compromise.
i had an rx8 previously, which handled great but the lack of torque was a chore daily. and the contant worry of engine catastophy put me off... what was that noise! oh just a £4k rebuild lol.
i got the 'raddo as a daily with the intention of getting something like a chimeara/elise for the weekend. but the raddo is too needy for this.
hence my idea of a mx5 and a focus as practice for running two cars that i can build up to a vx220 or something.

E46 Coupe with 6-cyls. Plenty under £5k on the classifieds after a quick look.
I'd have a guess that one of the things you'd probably miss about a VR6 would be the noise, a 4-cyl might not be enough? Just assuming, could be wrong.
Otherwise, a 172/182 is a great fun car and plenty of bike space too. Roofbars an option too. £4k would get you into a 182 (2004-on).
