My girlfirends sister has stupidly bought a car off her best friend, she's not even passed her test yet. She has it parked outside her folks house, its taxed and MOT'ed but obviously not insured.

In her defense she has no intention of driving it until she has passed her test and wants to take her test in her instructors car as she is familer with it. The glimmer of light to this act of stupidity is she has a test date in 6 weeks time I think.

What are her options, I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this question already.

I've personally told her to take it back but she doesn't want to do this. She can't really SORN it and with new regs coming in next year I see no other options. Learner driver insurance will cripple her because shes under 21 and a student even for a month or so and her parents don't have a garage so its on the road in full view.

She's techically the legal owner of an uninsured car I've explained 6 points on her licence never being to get insurance quote under a grand for the next 5 years, this bit she's grasped.laugh

I believe you can get "laid up" insurance at a significant discount. Not sure if it's valid when the car is parked on the public road, though?

Learner driver insurance actually tends to be cheaper than insurance for when you've passed in my experience - so if she can't afford it as a learner then she'd stuffed if she passes.

She'll still need a minimum of third party cover to leave it parked on the road. Oddly, insurance for Provisional Licence holders isn't too bad as the insurer assumes the car will only be driven with an experienced driver in the passenger seat. When she passes her test and can drive unsupervised, her premium will rocket.

Tell her to take it off the road or in sure it ASAP, like yesterday!!!!!!

It's not fair on insurance paying drivers. And should her car, even while parked be involved in an road traffic accident, others stand to lose out as they won't be able to claim against her.

If she won't do either you have the responsiblity to report her or at least tell someone else who does have the balls to report her.

yup that's my experience too - learner policy is cheaper than the "you can drive on your own now" policy.

I guess there are 3 options.
1) Someone needs to take out insurance on the car - maybe one of your parents could do this. If sis isn't on the policy then it should be quite cheap.
2) Move to car to some private, off the road, place.
3) Dispose of the car.

I think the sensible thing seems to be to tell her to get learner insurance or I'll shop her.laugh

I assumed it would cost an arm and a leg as learner drivers under 21 most be THE MOST risky group.

Compare the whatsname it is for her

This doesn't make sense. If her parked car was involved in an accident why would anyone be claiming against her?

OP, just get her to put it on your parents front garden with a sheet over it, away from the prying eyes of ANPR cameras.

if she can't afford to insure it now, then how will she insure it after passing her test and having the additional cost of fuel?

a female learner driver... your not looking at an arm and a leg... probably quite cheap to be honest (depending on what you call cheap) maybe looking at £70 for the first month... shop around im sure you'll find something in her price range

Handbrake fails and it rolls into another car. Sounds far-fetched, but I've seen two parked cars crash in this way.

It won't need to be covered up if it's off the road.

You can't insure a car you don't own.If parent becomes legal owner then that's OK,but nameing said girl as a second driver when she is in fact principle driver is illegal.

Every car I have ever bought didn't come with insurance. I bought it either before or after, but buying a car and taking delivery are 2 different things. Surely all she needs to do is buy insurance.

Am I right in thinking the 6 points only applies to 'driving without insurance' and not not owning a car without insurance?
