I'd be interested to receive feedback on what people think would be the ideal car for everyday use keeping within a £50k budget (but could be £30k+). The criteria needed to be met are (in no particular order):-
1. not older than 6 months old or new,
2. better than 25mpg on average,
3. sporty looking (abit ambiguous i know)
4. back seats unimportant but can have them
5. not a 5dr
6. not French!
7. not an SUV
8. can have 4wd but not essential
9. medium sized or smaller (ie not an Exec car)
10.would be used up to 10k miles per year, short commutes, weekend fun driving.

Discuss!

Cheers - Phil

That shouts lightly used 911 to me. Or is that too obvious?

If it weren't for point 5 of your post I'd suggest the new RS3 as announced yesterday. It has a REALLY positive 11 page thread about it too!!!

Evora

Less interesting options are TTRS or a Cayman S.

I'd strongly recommend against buying a brand new car at this price. Depreciation's always a killer, especially in the first year. It may be worth while looking at cars around a year old, at least then they've been run in as well.

Alas, some cars you may like.

Lightly used 6 series, although the new model coupe will be along soonish I guess.

Other than that an M sport Z4 would be in for a shout, especially for a weekend hoon withe the roof down?

Evora 2+2 is a good shout though

Maybe be slightly too old, and I'm not sure about the MPG, but you could just about get an SLK AMG

If I was thinking of buying a £50k car and doing less than 10k miles per year I'm not sure mpg would be my greatest concern. If it was I'd buy a £47k corvette and a £3k diesel skoda for commuting smile

I know it's not really my place to question as every person has different requirements, but why on earth is MPG a problem when doing under 10k miles PA on a new car? Surely running costs aren't a problem if you can handle ~£8000 per year in depreciation.

That said, assuming running costs aren't a problem then a Nissan GTR would be an option, though as a driving experience they're not to everyone's taste, so you'd have to test it yourself.

Alternatives are a:
Cayman S - http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1694471.htm
E90 M3 - http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1928477.htm
S5 3.0 TFSI - http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2192451.htm

I know, and I said "If I was thinking of buying a £50k car and doing less than 10k miles per year I'm not sure mpg would be my greatest concern", I know it's his thread and his question, but I don't understand it, it's like people who buy expensive cars and worry about the £200 per year difference in road fund licence - it's a £50k car, depreciation, servicing/tyres and insurance are probably your biggest worries if you're doing low miles - over 10k miles the difference in cost per year between a 20mpg and 25mpg car is £500 or thereabouts, which can easily be offset elsewhere.
