I see no mention in the article below of teaching children how to cross the road. Is there any such scheme running currently?

BBC News said:
Children are campaigning for drivers to slow down, as a survey suggests almost one in eight of Welsh nine to 13-year-olds have been hit by vehicles.

Road safety charity Brake's survey found the vast majority of children were concerned about fast driving near their homes and schools.

A Cardiff primary school, where pupils have been knocked down, is campaigning for slower speeds.

A blanket 5MPH limit in urban areas should make things nice and safe.

So now they're polling those too young to be considered responsible for their own actions about their opinions of other peoples actions?

Wibble?

Now according to brake

Most drivers speed

Any child being hit at more then 30mph is 100% to be dead

And 1 in 8 children have been hit by a car

So where are the big piles of bodies litterng the roadsides

So in your average school of 1200 pupils, 200 of them have been run over?

Do they have to cross the M4 to get to school!?

I've never hit anyone in my car, and I very much hope I never do. Only come close to hitting a child once, when he did the classic 'run out from between parked cars without looking' manouvre. Scared the crap out of both of us, I can tell you. Wouldn't have been my fault though.

1 in 8 is very high - I think Brake would be better off teaching kids to look where they're going if that many are getting hit.

Not another one frown
Have Brake just hired new PR consultants

Any idea how much more likely children are to play in the road if theyre told its safe to do so when traffic's going slower
Guess which way more will be injured or worse
Also guess whether Brake or the school have told them before carrying out the survey

No, that would be 1 in 6.

1 in 8 is only 150.

When I went to school I knew of two kids who got hit by a car. One died, one had both legs broken. Terrible shame, but they were crossing a dual carriageway rather than using the footbridge. Those stats make it 1 in 1,000 at my school, anyway.

Either modern kids are stupid, or drivers are more careless. Or both.

I've bought a set of these for my car. Once I get it safely bolted to my driveway and everyone else does the same, we'll all be fine and live happily ever after.

Indeed we do. I had to "dodge" one yesterday after his "friends" though it'd be funny to shove him off the pavement in front of my car.

It's no wonder 1 in 8 has been hit by a car if it's seen as fun to try and push your mates into the path of passing cars.

More to the point, they're going into schools where the poor kids have been traumatised by recent accidents just to get hold of some emotive-sounding statistics.

I bet if, say, Lamborghini went into the same school, parked a Gallardo in the playground and asked the kids which car they thought was the coolest, the same kids would go gaga for the Lambo.

For all their emotional pleading and wailing, they're surprisingly heartless and utterly manipulative.

Think of the children? Hey, Brake, leave those kids alone!

Trust me. If the child lived near by, and the parents and neighbours saw what happened, it wouldn't matter if it was your fault or not.

To them, little Tyson or Tomeka can do no wrong and YOU would be fair game.

Happened to an old mate of mine, and he actually feared for his own safety.

According to Brake it would, they seem to be using a rationale along the lines of blaming the presence of cliffs for the demise of lemmings (and yes I know it's a myth)

So 1 in 8 Welsh kids have never learned to cross the road safely or are too fooking arogant/thick to look both ways.

At least they get a ride in an Ambiwlans

As I always say when presented with statistics like this - show me the full details. I want the names, the actual details of the incidents, and the overall timescale at the very least before I accept statistics like this at face value.

I had some tt follow me and threaten me once, because '...if my kids ran out in the road they'd be fkING KILLED!'

'What are your kids doing running out in the road without looking then?'

Didn't go down well, but he did ps off and leave me alone.

It's everybody elses fault, naturally.
