Hi guys,

Looks like a great community you have going here! Tonight I was driving down a local road known for speed guns, this was at about 6:30 PM was just going with the flow of the traffic then I notice all the cars in front darting in to the right hand lane. I think nout of it and keep going (going with the traffic flow as we all do) then boom down the road is a police car with a officer aiming the dreaded gun.I immediately braked however I'm fairly sure I was doing around 38mph. My only problem is I aspire to be a traffic officer in the police (ironic I know) so I'm praying to god I don't get a fine, I was wondering if I do receive a fine is there anyway I can ring up and request to take part in a driving awareness course? I'll pay stupid prices if that what it takes.

Cheers!

Praying.

You are praying to God, not preying.

One prays to, or preys on.

One is seeking guidance or help, the other is sustaining your needs predatorially.

And you hope to be traffic plod... rolleyes

You'll get a lot of stick for wanting to be trafpol but not ruthlessly obeying the limit.

Also I'm pretty sure if it's a guy with a gun, he has to stop you and ticket you there and then. I could be wrong though.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the handheld guns aren't photo ones are they? Just speed readers for the copper to pull you at the time?

From what I've read they can send you a fine via the post.

You can get a speed awareness course up to 39mph, so you might be okay. This depends on force area etc. I was looking into it the other day (missus recieved NIP).
When you say "38mph", if that was speedo-indicated, you might actually have been going slower, and may not even get a NIP.

Don't worry too much, on two counts:
  1. You might not get a NIP for any number of reasons (luck, lower than threshold, etc etc)
  2. It's not the end of the world even if you do get a NIP. You may well be offered an awareness course.
  3. Even if you do end up with 3 points, it's unlikely to be the end of the world anyway. Loads of police have points on their licenses.

I haven't heard of anyone getting offered a awareness course through a NIP though? Only through a verbal one?

I received a letter the other day stating that I was caught by a "community speed watch programme" doing 36 in a 30. It then went on to say that "this is a polite warning to remind you to obey the speed limit and no further action will be taken at this time".

Fair enough, I remember the incident too, it's a dual carriage way section in Bath and I was stuck behind someone doing 20 so got a little frustrated and nipped around them.

If it was just a gun and you didn't get pulled, you may well receive a similar letter.

2 lads I know both got postal offers of speed awareness courses or the points, though both were clocked for doing around 58 through roadwork 50 zones on dual carriageways.

Well from what I've heard they get offered to younger drivers, I am indeed one of them at 18. I've been driving since Jan and never been warned for speeding or such, not that it will help me at all lol

It's actually on the back of the NIP form my missus got last week. (Hampshire)

ETA: the course costs £75. I have read that it's common in other forces for it to cost £100...

Well you heard wrong, they get offered to drivers of all ages, and are usually with the NIP, as an option, points or speed awareness course.
Also remember if you have only been driving since January, it takes a lot less for you to lose your licence than for some of us more senior folk.

Ease it back a bit, "I was keeping up with everyone else" is no defense.

If it was a police car, and they didn't stop you, your fine OK smile

If it was a Police/Council Van and they had the gun on a tripod, your going to get a fine! frown

Points/Fine for speeding isn't going to be an issue for Traf Pol, most have points already, some have more than 9 points, it's dangerous driving etc that will look bad!
