Snow chains...

Hi Folks...
Can anyone give me some info on good to get/not good to get snow chains/socks...has anyone ever tried them, are they worth getting ?

Not sure about chains...but last year I got a bit stuck in snow and ended up tying four pieces of rope through the rim and around the tyre - worked perfectly.
This method obviously won't work for all cars, especially if clearance is an issue, and it's only an emergency solution. But it got my Clio moving again when others were stuck going nowhere.
