Hire Care Suggestions
Discussion
I'm thinking of hiring a car over the Christmas week as me and wifey will both have time off work and we can go to lovely places and do lots of driving, etc, etc.
Now my criteria is something deisel, large saloon or even better an estate. Insignia or something similair with unlimited mileage.
What is the cheapest way to do this?
Is it better to book now or at Xmas?

I've always found that the earlier you book the better the rate, though I never hire in the U.K.
I'd be tempted to look at a few of the brokers (carhire3000.com, novacarhire.com etc) as you'll possibly get a better deal than with the main players.
Not much help really sorry.

This may not be the best advice ever given on pistonheads but...........
Book a tiny car and specify automatic. They have not been able to give me the small auto so have been upgraded for free to new Passats. If they do, by some miricle, have an auto Matiz tell them your plans have changed and you need to have a larger car. The guys on the desk get paid on upgrades and you can haggle.

I suspect this route will work better when the hire car company is a lot quieter. If you turn up an airport with 3 children, 5 suitcases and a nagging wife, having booked a Matiz Auto, the chances of you getting a cheap upgrade to and Insignia Estate are pretty slim...Book a tiny car and specify automatic. They'll have your eyes out.

We have a couple of knackered 3 year old 3 door 1.2 auto Corsas here especially for you folks. No we don't and you can try. Book a tiny car and specify automatic. OP: Book early, Most rental fleets are small at the moment due to the recession. Our 7 seaters are already fully booked for the Xmas week here. First come first served etc.
