Last Monday we were toddling along the motorway, and suddenly the engine cut out - cue a dashboard full of lights, and a coast to the side of the road.

After we stopped, the engine wouldn't turn over at all. Thought maybe we'd lost the timing belt/chain. The car was recovered back to the garage, where they told us the engine had seized. I'd checked the oil level at the roadside when we broke down, and there was oil on the dipstick. The car was serviced 10 days ago.

Luckily, the car still has 5 months warranty, and Toyota confirmed yesterday that they are going to replace the engine FOC. Hooray!

The garage are suggesting that there's a problem with Toyota engines where they fail to draw up the oil out of the sump, so even if there's enough oil available, it doesn't get lubricated.

The reason for my post is this - Google doesn't throw up much info about this alleged problem, and I'm wondering whether the garage are trying to cover their arses for something they messed up at the last service.

Don't get me wrong - I'm 100% satisfied with the service I've had (how could you not be?), but just a littled worried that if a problem really exists, the next time we'll end up stumping up the cost of the repair.

Bugger. At least it's getting fixed for nothing.

Was trying to think of what they could have done that caused the problem.

There is an issue with certain Saabs where sludge builds up on the strainer in the sump at the oil pickup. This blocks it eventually and can starve the engine of oil. Caused by incorrect oil and poor quality crankcase ventilation hoses.

Perhaps oil starvation has occured with your engine. When they've drained the oil they might have used a flush which has dislodged some crud and it's blocked the pickup.

Just a thought.
