And I'm 300 miles away from my manual.

Any thoughts what I should top up my e92 M3 with? Or ideally what does the service book say?

Thanks!

Castrol site says 10w60 and it'll take 8.8 litres in total. HTH

Oil level light, or oil pressure light? If it's the former, then top up a litre of any fully synthetic. If it's the latter, top up a litre of any old oil, because the engine is fked now anyway.

Oil pressure is affected by oil level though coffee

You need Castrol Edge 10w/60 fully synthetic, unless you can get hold of some genuine BMW stuff.

Check the oil level. As you probably know, it should be between the min and max marks. If it's above, this will result in high oil pressure and ruin seals and make the engine smoke. If it's below, then obviously lack of lubrication and you'll have low oil pressure when you go round corners or up and down hills.

Oil pressure is controlled by the oil pump relief valve. So no matter how high the oil is you still get x amount of oil pressure. What you get if you overfill the engine is far more oil thrashing in the sump which can lead to high oil temps and problems. You get blown seals if you really really over fill the engine.

If it's a modern one, this is probably a warning that it's approaching the limit.

Our last 2 Audis have this feature - it warns BEFORE the level gets dangerously low.

Have to agree with Thinforth, level and pressure are separate things. Also as my humble 123d has it, Im assuming the E92 M3 also has an electronic dipstick accessed via the OBC, so no dipstick with min/max on it to check?

Castrol Edge 10w60 is the right oil though, as opposed to the similar looking and more commonly available Edge Sport 10w60, but as a topup any good quality synthetic oil for petrol cars should be fine as long as you dont end up with 3-4 top ups between oil changes (in which case Id get the engine looked at!), but obviously check what the manual says.

Thanks all - been doing as much research as I can between bottles of wine. It is the electronic dipstick. Flashed up saying it's a minium.

Smart money is on add a litre of 10/40 and chill out!

Having said that - who'd have thought the M3 would be as bad as my TVR on oil consumption! I like it even more now - assuming engine still works.

Plus it's a right laugh in the snow!

It will be fine, as others have said there will be an element of safety built into the warning so it will tell you long before any damage can be done, otherwise there's not really much point in warning you if damage is already done!

Halfords sell the proper stuff so shouldnt be too hard to get hold of a bottle of the correct stuff: linky...

Phew, I was nervous for the OP for a moment. I've always been taught that if the oil light flashes up, its already too late.

On the E39 it was a yellow light after you stopped the engine meant low level. Chuck a litre of the good stuff in and don't worry about it.
If it was red for any period, you should be a bit worried.

That's often the case for the oil pressure light, but a lot of modern cars have electronic oil level gauges and if that comes on it merely means time to top up.

Thanks all. It literally tooK 1/2 litre and it was showing 3/4 on the electronic dipst thing. Book does say 10/60 but 10/40 will do if 10/60 not avail.

Also noticed it dropped to half on dipstick when running for a couple of hours.

Good safety feature but scared the crap out of me!

In my car the OBC dipstick has an intermittent fault, sometimes flashing up empty. First time it happened I st my pants and manually dipped 3 times to check !
