Snow + RWD = happy :)

Last couple of cars (3 or 4 years' driving) have been Fwrong Wheel Drive.
Despite current car (E46 318 touring) being too underpowered for dry fun, the current weather has just reminded me:
Right Wheel Drive is RIGHT
(Just wanted to mention that to people who might understand (unlike the other half
))

))The IS200 auto ive just bought (licence saver) has just shown me how much fun can be had in the white stuff! Im sure it could handle another 150bhp in the dry, has awesome steering lock can really hold it in a slide, much better than the slk200 i had last winter that was USELESS!! That thing span its wheels on creep but had much quicker steering.
used to have an e46 318 as well.
they do feel quite underpowered. just be thankful is not a 316!
found it very tough to get the back end out, even on wet.
now with a 328. same mpg. much worse insurance, but man its fun compared to the 318. think you need to trade up when the snow is gone!

Wait for the ice! BMWs on normal tyres are useless in the ice.
I dunno.... My parents road has become a heavily cambered ice rink. I was fully prepared for a whole heap of "Traction control no worky" in the slick ice, on my E36 328i. But it's been phenomenal. Admittedly, there's no room for titting about. Super smooth inputs and 5mph in 2nd are the order of the day, but the TCS nicely moderates sharp throttle inputs, keeping what traction there is and getting you going. This is on normal tyres too. I was very impressed. The smoothness of the engine helps too, it's been a joy to drive in these conditions. That said, on actual proper slick ice, pretty much nothing this side of studded tyres is going to help, be it FWD, RWD or 4WD!
I got my E90 320i on christmas eve last year just when all the heavy snow way hitting, I didn't get it off the drive for about 2 weeks. Totally useless in the snow!! I wanted the Astra I had before it back just to get around!! Might go for a Quattro next time if this weather continues.

Quattro is often Haldex which is not so great.Get a Subaru Imprezza, Outback, Forrestor or a Mitsu Evo for proper permanent awd.
stay with your E46 and you can have some fun and still drive about in the snow. remember Ice is always an issue with std tyres
I had a E46 328 & a E36 325 and E30 325 sport (crackin car) and I seem to remember that all of those coped with the snow pretty well
however the E92 335D I had for the last 4 winters was next to useless in the snow & ice.....it was plain useless on the original runflats
Winter tyres would have cured that I suspect...I've just fitted some (ice bears)to the wife's Golf GTI (Mk5) and the grip is astonishing
have fun but take care...others might be able to stop and steer

You need to change the title to " a bit of snow" rather than snow. If you were in Scotland just north of the Edinburgh / Glasgow parallel now you wouldn't be even be getting out of your drives, even with the mother in law and 2x25kg bags of sand in the boot.
