I am toying with the idea of parting with my MGF. Its not getting the use it used to at weekends now I spend a lot of my spare time at our second home. Its a 260 mile round trip and on anything but really nice days is not great in the MG.

Would an old Porker fit the bill instead?

Good build quality when new. Decent poke. A bit more robust for poor weather driving.

But it would be potentially a 30 yrar old car.

A good choice for what I want, or a massive money pit/nightmare etc.

Good ones don't seem that costly.

if its not getting used often I'd say its not a good idea, old cars dont like being laid up and used occasionaly otherwise expect windows, door locks / handles, starters, clutch hydralics etc to start having failures due to lack of use.

My previous 944's were in daily use and were great with very little trouble, my most recent one belonged to a mate who hardly used it and things kept going wrong with it, simply due to not getting enough use, the same applies to most 20+ yr old cars though...

Quite a lot. Possibly.

A lot of people have run them with little expenditure. I clearly didn't manage to buy a decent one. My lux has cost me £5,400 over the last 2 years. Problems have included clutch, water pump, sills... and it's all added up. The car cost me £2500 a couple of years ago, and I have struggled to sell it at £2k with all the issues remedied. It's all referenced in my garage, feel free to take a look.

So, yeah... it can cost.

But... it's a great car and a lot of fun to drive. I'd be keeping it if I could fit my daughter in the back.
