What car to get for £5000?
Discussion
I recently had my car stolen and am hoping that the insurance will pay out around five grand, so it's time to get a new car. It has to be a four door as i have two young kids, has to be rear wheel drive, manual, around 200 bhp and last but not least absolutley must be a diesel, for my own reasons. I think I could be swayed by a three door if it was an awesome car, maybe not even rear wheel drive, but it has to be around 200 bhp and a diesel. I think I already know what most of the suggestions are going to be but I hope I will be surprised.

Why not draw up a list of all rwd, diesel, manual, 4 door cars available for £5k.The list is likely to be so small no choice will be needed

That's what I thought would be said, that was the car i had stolen. just wondering if there was any others fitting the same description.
Urm.. well probably not.But if you had a description:
-must be British
-Must have live axles
-must be 4wd
How many vehicles would fit the description?
Here's another:
-Must be under 900kg
-mid engined
-not a kit car
-1.8 litres
-Toyota powered
Or another:
-Must be a turbo V8
-AWD
-SUV
Anyone can draw up a list and make it fit one or a couple of cars. If you want broader options you need to look not as specific solutions but at the base requirements, e.g.
mpg is meaningless as a target. What you need to know is how many miles a month and how much money you have or are willing to spend. This will then tell you what mpg you can afford.
Power - this doesn't tell you much about a car. What you really want is a car of 'x' performance, or 'y' power to weight or 'z' "feel".
BTW - not saying the BMW is bad car or the wrong choice, far from it
just saying there are others ways of defining what you want that may well open up possibilities you might not have thought of.

what's wrong with buying the same model of car as what was stolen?
unless the thief comes back knowing they can steal that one as well...
Too specific in the description of the car you want, why does it have to be rwd? why does it have to have 200 bhp? i can understand specifying 4 doors and a diesel.

Absolutely nothing. But the OP didn't say should I get 'x' or what else is there. They gave a very specific list, yet all the while kept it to one option. Seems somewhat pointless asking people"which one from this list of one shall I have?"

If you know what I mean.

Ok, not quite 200bhp and not RWD but a lot lower miles/more recent than a 530d

A camaro hmmmmm, nah think I'll leave it. what does it matter what I want or why, it's my bloody money and I'll spend it on what I want. thank you for the suggestion of the alfa, looks nice, I think I prefer the 530 though, but its suggestions like this that I want, it may not have all the things I specified but its an idea.
ps its sold too!

Well if you want suggestions.... leave the ability for suggestions

I don't care what you spend your money on, so feel free to pick your toys up
All I was saying is, if you define a list that there is only 1 item on it, it leaves little scope to recommend or suggest anything else, which makes it somewhat pointless. That said, there are loads and loads of fantastic cars for £5k, but I certainly can't suggest much as I don't really know what you actually want from it.
But hay ho, no probs at all, was only trying to help
