...at low speeds? One went past me this afternoon on the opposite side. My heart sank. The noise it made was awful. I got out to check if any damage but can't really spot anything partly due to the fact that the car is filthy ( was immaculate this morning!).
Could they possibly cause damage going at 30 mph and the salt hitting the side of your car? I mean do they actually cause damage??!

I very much doubt it will damage the paintwork so long as you risne it off.

They could crack plastic lenses on headlights, but you'd have to be very very unlucky.

I feel better now- it didn't happen in Leicester. Why does Leicester grit damage your car?

No, I can assure you this thread wasn't started to start ranting about the above. If it makes you feel better:

I am so genuinely grateful for our nation's gritters, without them we would all be dead.

Because Leicester Grit is a nutter, stay clear.

Yes, they can, but it seems the exception rather than the norm.

I remember a couple of years ago when i was driving home one friday in my E30 Baur....sans roof...

Lovely cold, clear night doing a gentle 80 odd leptons down the M40 when i see amber lights in the distance....ahh...i just remember hunkering downer and gritting (no pun intended) my teeth...

Painwork was fine though smile

Cheers kambites- so in all seriousness all should be ok. Is it actually rocks flying by or "sandier" stuff?

I imagine someone determined enough could drive one into your car repeatedly...

I'm not certain, but I think it's just salt crystals, which are a type of rock, I suppose.

LOL, reminds me of last year, pushing along on a NSL at 60mph, roof down, lovely clear (but cold) day, when a gritter appears coming the other way over the brow of the hill - yellow lights flashing - me & my mate just hunkered down & ploughed on through the shower of grit - cue much laughter.

In Austria the gritters sprinkle something like table salt on the roads and not the rocks in the UK. I have no idea why the difference... maybe cost in turning rock salt into fine grains?

In some conditions they do not salt the roads but sprinkle actual grit so that the grit embeds into the ice to give more grip. Quite effective too. Come the thaw they hoover the loose grit back up.
