My understanding is that these are only legal if on a pre 1.1.73 car.

Where do you stand if you have a pre 73 plate on a post 73 car?

Exactly as you say - the colour/style of plates is based on the date of first use of the vehicle, not the plate. Post-73 would need black on white/yellow plates. Police are pretty hot on it these days, I haven't seen an illegal black/white plate for ages.

To quote the DVLA: "Vehicles constructed before 1.1.73 may display traditional style ‘black and white’ plates i.e. white, silver or grey characters on a black plate."

or apparently if you have a CHAV'd up BMW X1, X3, X5 or X6 you can also have them.

I've got a 130i somewhere. If I get a body kit for it does this mean I can use an old style plate? It may be too high a price to pay, socially, though. biggrin
