I want to sell my 1999 1.8 ford focus and get a Toyota Celica around the 4k mark. However the clutch is starting to slip very badly, so should I sell it with a bust clutch or should I get it repaired before I sell it? Also anything to look out for when viewing Celica’s?

Many Thanks !

Clutch change should be around the £300 mark at an independant garage.

I'd guess that you'd have to lower your selling price more than that in order to get someone to buy it.

Ie, car with working clutch £1500, broken clutch £1000.

Maybe get a few quotes from local garages to see how much it will cost?

I think the days are gone when people would buy cars to do stuff like this themselves. On simple RWD cars, it wasn't a difficult job but nowadays, most people just won't buy it. the best you can expect is someone will buy it and do it themselves to sell on at a profit which means they will make a derisory offer.

Would never buy nor sell a car which I knew had a fault which could easily cause an issue.

Fair enough if the passenger window or central locking on that side had failed, but would step away from a slipping clutch.

Or atleast unless it was worth my time as in the £500 off so £300 to fix problem and £200 lazyness tax still in my pocket and not handed over to the seller.

Thanks for the responses. I was thinking it I would probably have to get it fixed before selling it, just wanted to see what the general opinion was. Have to get in booked in and start the hunt for a Celica. I’ve tried to search for Celica topics but didn’t have any joy, could anyone point me in the right direction?

Clutch assembly £44.99 delivered on ebay. Cant be more that 5 hrs to replace via a cheapish mechanic, so less than £150 all in?

RE: Celicas. The consensus seems to be to get the facelifted model as the early ones are prone to engine problems.

Cheers for the clutch link, cheaper I can get it done for the better! What year was the facelift for the Celica?

if you're get a newer one - don't get a 140 - too damn slow!

we had one of the first new shapes on a 99 and just couldn't get on with it - too slow for its looks and just felt cheap inside. Once the new car joy had worn off it soon became tiresome

If you are getting a Celica, get an older one, like they used to rally. If you can find one, an ST205 Carlos Sainz edition is probably the best one. If you can't get one of those, I'd go for a GT4 ST205, which is the model the Sainz edition is built off.

I really like the GT4 - remains a competent, good looking car to this day.

I sold a car back in the Spring, the guy came to look at it and all was well, unfortunately whilst waiting for my no plate to be transfered over by the DVLA the gearbox blew and took the clutch with it. I was then left with your dilema, tell the guy it needed doing and suffer either a walk away or a huge drop in price or have it fixed.

I chose to have it fixed, so the guy got the same car with a new gearbox and clutch. Whilst it cost me alot of money £750 ish I was glad I did it, it meant that I could sell the car on at a decent price and also sleep well knowing the guy wasn't going to come round and bust all my windows!

Imagine if it had gone wrong the day after he picked it up, technically would have been Caveat emptor (buyer beware) but I didn't want that kind of hastle!

However, your clutch has not actually gone you just think it will, any knowledgeable buyer will pick up on this if not disclosed!

IMO I would just do the clutch and get rid. Just think would you buy a celica that needed the same doing? Would you trust that this is all it needed?

On the Celica front a mate was looking for one a few months ago, there are alot out there with big mileage and also loads that have been stoved in at the front, suppose that alot of petrol heads drive them around very quickly!

Think you'll be shocked at the cost of insurance to but if you can make you peace with it I think it is a nice car!

Thanks for the tips. I wasn’t going to try and pretend to anyone that the clutch didn’t need doing, its pretty obvious anyway as when you floor it the revs shoot up. My Focus has 135K on the clock so even if I get the clutch done id imagine id only get about £800-900 for it. That GT4 does look v nice! I had my eye on this one: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2010...

The above issue is different if I buy a car privately or from a trader I would expect to pick it up in at least as good a condition as I viewed it in.
If you are honest and put that the clutch needs work and is reflected in the price then you may get away with it but even then it will be a bargaining chip or a delay in selling your car.
