I've put on a set of official BMW wheels with snow tyres which are listed as the recommended size for winter tyres by BMW.

So it's 110% proper as per the manufacturers recommendation for my car in this country.

Is there a need to tell the insurer and why?

I don't feel any need personally as it's all within the recommendations.

Personally I don't think there is a need, but plenty will disagree!

You do not need to tell your insurers. Just as you don't need to tell them if you fit Michelins instead of Bridgestone.

I find it quite rediculous... By logic we should only be limited to one brand of tyre... If I go for top of the range tyres does that mean that i'm more likely to use the full potential of the car and therefore have a crash? (Like they say when you upgrade brakes....)

Leaving aside all the "guidance" from internet experts and keyboard warriors - why not just phone the insurance company and chat to them?

Worst case - 5p phone call wasted.

Best case - avoid massive hassle and cost if it all goes pear-shaped.

...the thieving b'stard insurance companies would find any little loop-hole to deny a claim....to be absolutely safe, inform them.

Is that real vitriol, or bluster?

It's a guy with a chip on his shoulder, who won't explain why he believes this to be true.

My guess is he lied on a proposal to get the cover cheaper, then was surprised when they exercised their legal right not to pay him when he claimed, or even better left the keys in his car, then disappeared and wondered why the insurers said he didn't apply reasonable care to his property.

This is what I did, and as long as I don't change the alloys from OEM ( I have a spare set for trackdays luckily) they weren't bothered about the winter tyres. They were more concerned that I might put different wheels on it, than the tyres.. I've even got an email confirming as much, just as back up.

A two minute phone call is all it took.
