You can choose one of 3 cars all of them have 400Bhp per ton with the driver onboard. They are all RWD and 2 seats with a manual 6 spd box and LSD.

The 500kg car is in the caterham mould and has bugger all in the way of creature comforts oh and it has a crap top speed

The 1000Kg car is in the MX5 mould and has weather protection and has the very basic in creature comforts like a radio and bugger all else it has an average top speed

The 2000Kg car is in the Mercedes line of things and has every single electrical toy you could ever think of and has the highest top speed

Now which one do you choose for your second fun car and why?

I would go for the 500kg car as i love the lightness and directness that comes from such a car

As a second car I'd probably go for the 500kg option. Alternatively am I allowed to pick the 800hp one, rip out everything apart from the drivers seat and drill holes in anything that isn't structural?

Middle one!

Your caterham is going to be considerably closer to 300 bhp/tonne than 400 bhp/tonne once you've added the driver...

middle - much as I enjoy light and nimble on the track, with the amount of Terry's there are on the roads today, I like at least some semblance of metal around me to give the falsest of illusions of safety.

The 1000kg, middle road car. The caterfield won't get used enough due to complee lac of practicality, i.e. rain, leaving it outside of work each day etc, the merc styles a barge for the motorways and I'd get no use out of it.

And to get 300Bhp/tonne you would have to be pretty porky at 26stone

My first car is over 400 bhp and 1,400kgs, so for my second car I'd take the Caterfield. biggrin

Caterham every time, if its a second car you might as well go for the no compromises maximum performance approach in my book!

Middle one.

Can put up with 'moderate' creature comforts (VX220 style) but probably not the most basic for an everyday car.

In the UK, there is very little opportunity to use the massive speed that the 2tonner would come with. I think that decent handling and a decent amount of clout is a better compromise.

I'm a fat git too and my weight would blunt the lighter one more than the middleweight.

Edit - Idiot here didn't read properly, disregard the everyday car comment.

I've had a 244bhp Caterham and a 407bhp Cerbera. The Cerb is a little portly so probably a little under 400bhp/tonne, but I'd choose that for my next car.

In fact I HAVE chosen the middle one. I'm going for a powerful Stratos rep next.

First one, though the one I am about to start building will only be 400KG and 150bhp - initially at least.

For a fun the the 200bhp & 500kg is by far and away the best.

Easily enough power to have fun, nothing will get away from you and will be cheapest on fuel.

400bhp & 800bhp in heavier cars will cost more to run and will be able to get you into far more trouble.

The CaterField every time, in the pursuit of driving pleasure, there's no need for creature comforts, that's what a second car is for.

Plus have you seen the price of a gearbox on the SL63 AMG? I know of someone who sold one, one of their reasons was that when the gearbox goes it's eyewatering and a long wait.

ETA. although why stop at 200bhp?

Having driven a 205bhp Seven a few weeks ago (slightly more than 500kg's though, so probab ~350-375bhp/ton, that would be it for me.
I don't have much experience or fast cars, but it was beyond phenomenally quick. It was mad, bad and I loved it! My dad's wasn't too bad with 140bhp either!wink

800bhp car because it will be very very fast and much more expensive than the others.
