Does anyone know what the lap record is for the M25 and in what car it was done? Does anyone have any personal bests?

It was done in about 45 or 47 minutes by a Porsche turbo in the early '90's, started at the Dartford Tunnel and finished there. I doubt very much whether it could ever be beaten now due to the amount of cameras on there now. Im sure someone will be along soon with exact times and exact car.

Indeed in it's first couple of years of being fully operational there was a clandestine club of fast car owners who would meet every now and then at three or four in the morning and drive the "London Ring". Rather than todays "Ring Sticker" seen on the back of almost any model of car, they had a discreet window/bumber sticker that just said "sub 60", proclaiming they had completed a sub 60 minute lap.

I did hear about this back in the day, and IIRC one of the original record holders was meant to be an xjs v12, although this could have been just rumours

These days you'd probably get a quicker time by walking around it.

Now come on! 128 miles in 45 minutes is an AVERAGE of 170mph. That is simply not possible in any car I would have thought.

Anecdotally, a handful of very senior people at Ford Motorsport once did this RS200s. Allegedly.

That's what I thought. Turns out the M25 is 117/118 miles. So that brings the average speed at 45 mins to 157MPH. Still highly unlikely

Also the slight issue of fuel. I've heard that a Lotus Carlton on full power will swallow a tankful of juice in 60 miles.

agreed, 160 is very hard to drive at with occasional traffic, and for 45 mins would be quite painful.

Indeed. He said something like 45 mins. And a tankfull. Do-able I would think if you had Le Mans long range tanks in something fast but reliable. GT2, SLR perhaps.

If I ever win the lottery I'll throw a couple hundred grand at solving this problem. And documenting it too biggrin
