Is it just me or are they taking the piss?
From what I gather they want a 40% increase to give them a starting salary of about £30K. Now credit where it's due but these guys claim they should now be classed as "professionals", that they risk their lives, and should be paid that much accordingly. Well I'm sorry but bollox. To my frame of mind a "professional" is normally a graduate or someone with enough years of experience in a field to be accepted by a professional body i.e Chartered or Member of the Institute of nose pickers or whatever. Not some bloody prima donna who's done a six month course and 2 years probation, then spends 90% of their working life, playing pool, sleeping, in the gym, polishing their truck and the other 10% earning what they are paid. Life on the line my arse there are plenty of others who risk more for alot less money. Coppers start on a low 20's, members of the forces the low teens, every sailor in the royal navy who goes to sea is trained to fight fires simple because there is no fire brigade mid atlantic. Take a look at the stats and see how many firefighters have actually been killed in comparisson to coppers and tell me who deserves more.
Firefighters piss off and take your ransom demands and shove them up your arses you have no rights to hold the country to ransom or to your 30k starting salary....What triggered this rant ???? I sat behind a top of the range fairly new Jeep cherokee tonight with a private plate and a little sticker saying "Fire brigade personel" and a lovely little crest, your having a laugh you lot.

Mel I agree with you. 30k as a start is a joke when coppers get about 18k.

Now, they don't go in if there's a danger of that happening. My mate's fireman brother died 25 or so years ago and it's devastating, but hang on. Firemen do have a good life though as they are a) the best snooker and darts players ever seen bar that lot at the Crucible b) have to sometimes do nothing on a shift but get a cat out of a tree (and I've seen it takes take a couple of bloody red tenders to do that
and c) Unlimited women as apparently they all want to shag a fireman for some unknown reason (the mystique) and they play on it. "Well, it was diificult love, we managed ro make our way in finally through the dense heat and smoke to put out the chip pan."
They don't get my vote I'm afraid.

They want a decent wage for today's living. Most professional types can increase thier wage as they get older, promotions etc. They reach a point and thats it.
In that case I'm for them, same for police and ambulance.
Being un-edjimicated in the ways of finance etc, just my view.
I understand that a lot of firemen/women cannot afford to live in the area they work in.

Rozzers in london get 26K starting which seems like a fair ammount and they do sod all of use most of the time, I do think 21K starting for A fireman is a bit tight, I'd not volunteer to get myself into a burning anything for that, parity with other emergency services might be an Idea.

30k is not that much when you consider the hours and the shifts
I work a fully continious shift pattern and the hours work out to about 1760 hours a year all bank holidays are restered in Xmas day with Dennis the fire engine not the kids a lot of weekends are spent at work on shift or another or in bed after a shift and its all saleried NO overtime pay.
In my area there are a lot of chemical factories and food freezing companies [ammonia nasty stuf]and two oil refinaries and the hgv trafic to and from them. Most watches have a shout at least once a shift and a standing fire call drill to the local hospital daily plus all the false alarms [auto fire detection system at work called them 5 times in six days recently] we have three units and a fire chife each and every time.
Plus the RTA's they attend.
I think its about time the goverment payed the emergancy services a fair and decent wage not just enough to get by on.

Nice rant, Mel. Greedy sods. That General Secretary of their Union is a rebirth of Scargill as well - lefty bsatard. Gets my bloody goat that some kids are putting themselves through years of medical school and so forth and yet these monkeys want to spend a few months running up and down ladders and running out of burning buildings because it's too hot, yet get 30 grand for the privelege. I mean c'mon - who in their right mind would sanction a pay hike like that ? Who's next ? Nurses ? Teachers ?
Firemen, Nurses, Teachers, and the police should be paid realistic cash for what they do. They all start on shite money which I think is wrong but beyond that if they want to earn more they should be incentivised to progress and given the oppotunities to do so.
My cousin is a lead fireman, loves the job, works his arse off and has to deal with some truley horrid thing (he's the bloke in the car that gets to the RTA first). He has progressed starting when he got kicked out of the navy for failing his captains exams (busy fighing in the Falklands dealing with a ship with a hole in it and an Exocet in the radio room. They all failed and all got the boot, nice eh?). He's worked his way up and has a reasonable wage. What pissed me off are people who expect to do the same job their entire lives with no wish to advance but still expect huge pay increases.

While 30k starting is taking the p1ss somewhat I do have some sympathy for the guys.
Up until he was knocked off his bike and forced to retire from the fire brigade my Dad was officer in charge of a part time station, now I know these guys are paid volunteers but it is nowhere near the fulltime guys, and just having a quick think this is what I can remember happening to my Dad.
Fell though a first floor roof and when he stood up in the garage below the gas meter blew off the wall and just missed him - he felt the air movement as it wizzed passed his ear
Totally set on fire - human torch stylee - when a barrell of roofing pitch exploded during a fire fight
Blown Ass over T1t when fighting a fire in a garage and the owner forgot to mention there were some gas bottles being illegally stored
Seeing numerous dead men, women & children after numpty drives cause ridiculous fecking acidents

I thought the argument they were putting forward is that thier pay hasn't increased in real terms relative to other occupations for about 15 years or something. They claim they should be paid more because the job is dangerous.
Surely saftey standards have increased considerably over the last few decades and therefore thier work is much less dangerous, so they should have a pay cut.
I think, as has been said above is that they don't have the opportunity to excel in thier job and be paid according to how good they are and how ambitious they are which must be frustrating to the best firefighters.

They work 4 days on, 4 days off.
That means they work 26 weeks a year.
Two of the 4 days are nightshift spent in bed.
That means they now work 13 weeks a year.
They get 5 weeks holiday.
That means they now work 8 weeks a year.
They have, on average, 2 weeks a year off sick.
Now we are down to 6 weeks a year.
They spend 2 weeks a year on training courses.
That means they work 4 weeks a year.
Apparently 3.5 weeks a year are spent smoking.
And they want how much? I wish I had an hourly rate like that. I have a friend who's a fireman and like to remind him of the above at every available opportunity. I also remind him that I pay his wages with my tax contributions, so he owes me a drink.

Ever met a fireman without a second (or third) job? I know firemen who are bricklayers, carpet fitters, photographers, wedding videographers, etc etc. Many of them are already pulling in over £30k.

OO sorry that was a bit harsh !! Just dont have much time for public sector wingers.. 10 years of running a business that pays more in tax to the govnmt than it pays me does have that effect.
