The "real" 4x4 Rex.
Discussion
I spotted what I've looking out for ages in the P&R carpark the other day (this is going to sound really crap).
A '92 Civic Shuttle, but wait, It had the Real-time 4x4 system, and parking Twink next to it and carefully inspecting both cars' hind quarters, there's a very real possibility of converting Twink just by bolting-on (shortened prop'permitting).
Do a little head work on the spare engine to make up for added drivetrain losses, and it could make Twink quite a CCC style weapon...
...anyone ever heard of this being done before?

Oh shit,
you've found photogragrapic evidence of the "smashing blouse!" Quick burn it!
Was that the one taken on that night out in Newmarket...seem to to remeber some others...
...one word "video-shop".
Now behave yourself Thrust!
Carzee, don't you watch the news?

speaking personally, I still haven't the faintest clue what your first post is about - I can't make head nor tail of it..

DM - you and thrust know each other outside Pistonheads? 'cos there seems a bit a needle going on?
I am guessing you have the strange notion of making your CRX permanent 4WD?
How very odd. I like it
BTW - quick brag - My Uncle used to draw Dangermouse and my Aunty 'paint & traced' at Crosgrove Hall... I ended up with some great original animation cells
Cheers, Phil

I've toyed with the idea of converting my CR-X to 4 wheel drive for a while now.
The Civic Shuttle has a 4X4 varient, and I think it might be possible to swap the drive train straight onto the CR-X. Obviously the prop'shaft will need shortening, and I think the shift linkage needs to be converted to a cable actuation, but I should otherwise be possible.
I was wondering if anyone had done it before.
that's all...
...I'll get my coat.

Why? I thought the CR-X was supposed to be a nippy light fun car...You may get a bit more grip on corners but I bet overall the car will be worse for it. (weight, power sapping 4wd).

Ok...
I'm going to try to resurect this one, as it was a genuine question, not farsiclular piece trollite- threadology in the vien of that created by one Mr. Chassis.
Any answers from those who have some idea will be gratefuly received along with the sh#t loads of DM pisstake manouvres, which will be too!

OK DM, some constructive points with no DM mocking...
1. will it package? where will the propshaft sit (is there enough of a tunnel?) is there room in the engine bay for the transfer box, where will the diff go, will you have to move fuel tank, boot floor etc?
2. will it ruin the car (see previous comments - traction vs added weight)
3. what was the shuttle back end actually designed for? true full time 4x4, or the nasty Calibra style type which relies on speed difference front to rear before it sends any torque backwards?
it'll be lots of work, but could be a cracking project....

Havng looked for a few minutes (it was in the rain, and I was late for work) the floor pan looked very similar to the CR-X. So the space should not be to much of a problem.
The wheelbase is significantly shorter, so the prop shaft would have to be modded, but the rest looks to be a "bolt-off,Bolt-on job". The tunnel may be an issue, but it think enough space is gained through the use of a cable instead of rod gear linkage. The exhaust may need rejigging, but I think the 4x4 packaging was the rationale behind the wierd route of the civic exhaust anyway, looking at it.
As far as the tourque transfer is concerned, according to my Civic workshop manual (had to import it from the states, there're like rocking house poo), the Shuttle has a real time torque distribution device that sends all the power to the front wheels until they spin, at which point it is split and sent rearwards.
This I guess means that it would only make a difference when wheelspin occurs from a stand still or during power understeer. Due to the passive rear wheel steer this should make the car even more adjustable on the throttle an actully stop the slippy slidey wet roundabout understeer....
....or that's the idea anyway. Make any sense?

Makes sense to me - I've done the same "park next to a 4x4 Shuttle and have a look underneath" thing and it does look like a goer. I'd estimate the weight increase as approx 100kg. This should improve weight distribution (Twink is a bit front heavy
) and you'd be looking for about an extra 12lbft torque to keep the performance the same. This is doable without spending loads of money (I have a very useful supersprint ex-manifold which makes loads of torque over standard - feel free to measure it up). Gutting the interior is the other way to keep the performance the same and it would lower the C of G as a bonus. The extra traction might even negate the problem with fitting stiffer springs we discussed earlier...
