Focus on extended warranty?
Discussion
OK, well I've gone and put a deposit down on a Focus ST170, fully loaded for just over £15k. Good price even though it's an import.
The question is: should I take out the extended warranty for £595? It's supposed to give two extra years' cover but, if you don't use it, you get the cash back. Is there some catch with this? Anyone else found it valuable when selling the car on (as I may do in a year or two's time)?
Be glad to hear your experience.

I used to work for a company running Ford's customer services, so Ive a fair bit of experience with Ford Warranties.
Is this a new car? If not, how old is it?
Essentially if the warranty offered is a dealer or third party warranty, I wouldnt personally bother, Ive seen a lot of issues with these.
If its the Ford extended warranty, then I would take it.
Unless they have changed policy recently, they dont quibble that much over claims and if something isnt covered, but has clearly failed due to a defect, they will often make a contribution towards the costs.

IIRC warranty holdings arent owned by Ford, although a lot of dealers imply that the warranty is associated with the manufacturer in some way.
Personally I wouldnt use them.
Ford do offer extended warranties, these have to be purchased within the lifetime of the new vehicle warranty. IIRC you can apply these to an imported vehicle. Give the Ford customer assistance centre a call and ask them, rather than the dealer.

Manek - alternatively, if you want to buy a used one, I have a colleague who's selling his shortly...
... car is silver and well cared for, and will have the balance of the three year warranty to carry over. It's mainly done motorway miles and has had it's first (12k) service.
Drop me a line via my profile if you're interested...

OK, no problem! - just thought I'd offer.
If you've got any queries, drop me a line and I'll see if I can dig out stuff if required!
Only real issue is to make sure you run the car in properly - go easy on the power band and the brakes till you've got some miles under the car; brakes especially, as people have warped discs!
Useless fact: The ST170 stops quicker and in a shorter distance than the RS...!

Thanks for the tips -- it's going to be tough to keep the revs down because, judging by the test drive I took, the engine loves t rev up to 7k and beyond.
Now, I wonder if there are any mods available to make it go just a tad quicker...

The Variable Cam timing (VCT) comes in around 3500rpm and then the Variable length inlet manifold moves around 6800-7000rpm, and it just flies round there!
I know several people who have them (cunning, since I work for Ford) and general opinion is not to bother with any of the "induction kit" type things... maybe a panel filter to aid breathing a bit. Just take a look at the size of the induction piping...!
Check out www.ffoc.co.uk forums... although you might find them to be a bit more Max Power than you'd like.

PS: If I'd known you worked for Ford I'd have asked you beforehand if you knew of any cars!
D'oh!
It's no secret... but if I can help with Ford related queries I'll do my best.
I know the ST170 will never be in the same league as your Chim, but I hope you enjoy the car for what it is.
(they really loosen up around 5k and then again at 10k... and you'll be surprise just how much grip they actually have!).

The test drive (in the wet) amazed me -- I took an hour over it and, by the end of it, I was chucking the thing round corners I'd have been much more careful about in the TVR, even after four years of ownership. And it just went. It's definitely a top fun car despite the lack of TVR grunt.
I think a track day may be called for -- though the one thing I really will miss is that glorious, throbbing V8 noise!
