There seem to be frequent new arrivals here who dive straight in and insult people who post here regularly and have been doing so, for the benefit of the rest of us, for some considerable time.

A particular example is the sort of grief MadCop has been receiving recently. Now, I'm sure MadCop is big enough to look after himself, but he should not have to face a barrage of narrow-minded abuse and personal insults from people who've been here for two minutes and have got a hard-on for pissing the police off because they got a ticket once or their car was stolen in Brixton a couple of years ago.

We've all had 'unjust' treatment (as we see it) from the police as motorists, but the fact is that here's a guy who's a serving officer, with vast experience who devotes lots of his free time to helping us out, giving friendly and insightful advice on legal matters that are pertinent to all motorists.

Aside of MadCop, there are many others of us who manage to conduct reasoned and polite discussions, without insulting each other (in any more than a jocular manner). Read and absorb some of the historic threads and you'll find something to have a laugh about and a lot of useful info that you never knew before.

There is a real community spirit here - many of us have now met face to face at various meets, BT&P etc and the fact is that many have invested a certain amount of trust and emotional involvement in the community, making real friends - and this is generally understood and respected by those who choose to stick around. One only has to look most recently at the network of people on PH that have stood up and offered their support to Scruff at this terrible time for him.

This community spirit could easily be lost for ever if people persist in turning up out of the blue and posting moronic insulting nonsense which serves no purpose but to piss people off who deserve better. moreover, it makes you look like a twat who should go back to ScoobyNet or Evo Forums or wherever else people can behave like morons with impunity because the traffic level is so high that no one but your giggling beany hatted mates will notice..

I suggest that a forum charter is drawn up and enforced before this place becomes a lost cause. I'm losing faith and I know a few of the other regular contributors are too.

We do have a good laugh as well, but there's a line that's now being crossed all too frequently. If you're new, please at least take a little time to assimilate to the level of discussion which is acceptable here - you'll be glad you did, because there's an enormous amount to be gained from this community. Otherwise, you'll be another one who posts once or twice, insults a lot of people, get's roundly condemned by the core population and then fecks off again.

Here endeth the lemming.

Good point Carzee. I can't keep up with all the discussions these days and am therefore missing some of the more offensive posts.

Could I have some more volunteers for moderators please?

Yes, agreed. I came to Pistonheads because the quality of people and posting is far higher than the reams of bullshit that populate the de-facto Elise Forums at british-cars.co.uk.

A well aimed friendly insult is all very well but out and out abuse is a no-no. The rules of posting are being ignored a little too often at the moment.

Oh, by the way. Carzee, you're a tit.

For those of us less eloquent than yourself Carzee, I wholeheartedly agree. I post fairly infrequently, but I do read every day, and do get a lot from the site, be it a laugh or keeping up with the news. There are some knobends who do appear from time to time, but I feel you have to expect this, as we (not me personally) do exercise undercover sorties to wind up other forums of the unwashed variety. Possibly some of them getting their own back?

Well said. But in order to moderate, we have to be carful in not just moderating offensive words, but the context they are delivered in, and it is here that the problem lies. The person typing the text on occasion types a humerous comment, but others can see it only as a rude or offensive remark. If the same comment was made face to face the other person may see the humour as intended and not take offense.

Sorry for this ramble.

One of the biggest communication issues I face as a Project Manager is e-mail, as the context of the remarks is often lost in the text.

In this form we must rely on text, graphics and good will, and sometime a lot of interpretation.

Just my two pence worth.

I am all for keeping the insults down, but just wanted to make the above comment.

David

Well said Carzee. I have been thinking the same thing all week as there have been a few real tossers on here recently who then go back to scoobynet or whatever and ruin not only our reputation but that of TVR owners in general.

I know I can be out of order at times but we all do it and we are forgiven because
a) we are all friends after BTap
b) we have some respect for Ted and the quality of the site.

Ted, I'm more than happy to be a moderator if you need one. And I promise not to abuse it. We could definitley do with a more watchful eye, because there will always be idiots who try to spoil a good thing.

If I cud just take this oppertunity for ranting on about a broadband discussion. Im sorry if i was wrong, I honestly said what I said thinking it was correct and with the intention to help the person out. My source was incorrect and ill kick him for it, lol.
sorry if i have offended anyone.

Note to petrolTed: is there a way of seeing who has added you as a mate, as this would give people a good idea of how much they are 'liked / wanted on this forum'

Bollox Flash, you fell out the same mould as me, see that line over there we cross it far to often. Flasher a moderator I'd rather put rusty nails through my testicles.

Ditto Ted, I appear to have a bit of time on my hands at the mo so I'll do my bit for Piston & Head

btw I find these interlopers quite amusing as they stick out a mile and more often than not get put firmly in their place....never had an insult aimed at me though so don't know how it feels, unless I count Tallpiss of course

You're dead right CarZee.

I've tried to explain to people what pistonheads is and its hard to describe. The best way is that its a place where anyone can come to talk to other people on the pemise that they have a common interest in entusiastic motoring.

I feel I have proven over the last few months that I can count myself among you as more than a mere troll, judging by the reaction envoked in the rest of you all over the "Ponsey Penfold" incicdent. I was genuinely touched that people I didn't know lept to my defence.

As a result of PH, I feel I am starting to make friends, and am likely to even meet up with some of you at some point.

I likely to get burnt when I meet Cp.Muppet, and promise to be careful not to let Mrs.Mouse snr. kill Mungo somewhere very high up in Wales (if he's still up for it (I fear he might be missed!).

Although this is a motoring oriented site, I think its nice that people feel they have some where to come when the shit hits the fan and advice is needed. It's got to be better (and a damned sight cheaper)than counselling, an the sheer wealth of experience on tap ensures you'll get a good hearing.

Using advice from Samno1 only yesterday, I have secured an informal interview with a company I'd love to tell you all more about (later I promise).

That's the great thing. It's not a load of Backward Cappers popping HP stats and caps in each others ar$es, or geeky gimps comparing triple over-headcam centre lobe lift durations.

Its normal people enjoying extraordinary experiences and sharing them.

Don't let this place die....I've not been here long enough.

Keep it up Ted, the pistonheads is a good effort too...

Mouse.

...Ted I'd love to be a moderator, but I seem to the one that kills the threads anyway. ooops.
