Extra rules and regs
Discussion
It's the assumption that you're going to do something wrong/illegal that I resent. Like feeling guilty when you see a police car even if you're sober and doing 29mph with both hands on the wheel. Like getting a credit limit of £100 via Dunn & Bradstreet when you've got 20K in the bank and never been overdrawn in 10 years of trading!
'I thought they were a reasonable set of regs. Bear in mind you're a regular. All I'm trying to do is set out the dos and don't for new members so that they don't upset the old timers'
That's fine. I don't have a problem with guidelines. What I objected to was the 'compulsory nature' of the set-up whereby one had to check a box before proceeding - it seemed too compulsory for a site that is ultimately about enjoyment.
Northernboy - I suspect your bank account is considerably bigger than mine. But to answer your question, (1) I'm living on it because the national economy is shagged so my customers aren't spending any money, (2) the global economy is also shagged which means there's nowhere sensible to invest it. If the fund managers don't get/spend/waste it, your mate Gordon Browne will get/spend/waste it when he taxes anything they leave behind. So it's nice where it is thanks. Call me an economic refugee. Can I have some benefit now please, and a free house?

Given that I'm one of the chief protagonists of "knob gags" - why did I not feel it was OTT?
Personally, I thought it was perfectly reasonable... at the end of the day Ted provides us with a FREE service. Therefore, we should play by his rules as it's his party.
Now at any party, things can get out of hand and you get the odd gatecrasher, and there's always someone who'll upset everyone else in the room - but Ted does a damn good job of keeping the whole thing running smoothly.
You lot are over-reacting IMHO.

Fair point. I've changed the wording.
Nah, my bank account is empty, and my credit card bill will be unpaid again this month.
Although I probably ought to have a savings account in case things go wrong, I don't, and I don't keep any money sitting in my current account either. Everything coming in is already earmarked for going out again.
I did buy an ISA a while back, but that's worth about half what it was.
Might I suggest that you see about making an overpayment on your mortgage? Many places will let you withdraw overpayments at a later date with mo penalty, and it will be reducing the interest that you currently pay (out of your net income), as opposed to producing an extra tax charge at the moment (at your marginal rate of tax).
I understand that you want the flexibility to get your hands on your own money at very short notice, but you're throwing away 20 pounds a week at the mom, which pays for quite a few pints. If your mortgage lender offers decent flexibility (which is common even on bog standard repayment mortgages like mine), then it might be worth doing.
Of course, what you ought to do depends on more than just finacial considerations, but playing tax/interest charges off against each other can add up to a decent amount of cash.

There is no such thing as a free website, or is that lunch ?
Then again if you are homeless I suppose there is.....

'Nah, my bank account is empty, and my credit card bill will be unpaid again this month.'
If so you have my sympathy. But what about your legendary tax bill? Is it all PAYE?
'I did buy an ISA a while back, but that's worth about half what it was.'
Yep!
'Might I suggest that you see about making an overpayment on your mortgage?'
That's a sound idea, but as I'm 2/3 of the way through the mortgage period and interest rates are so low, the savings are not as great as if I had 24 years to run at 15%! Plus the money does get about £45pcm net interest, so it's not quite dead.
I guess this would be better off on financeheads.com...? Sorry for cluttering up your site Ted - I'm honoured that you've changed your site twice just to suit me! (Mind you, when you're a big PLC it might be different...) Anyone been able to get through to Goldfish recently?

Oh yeah, tax bill. I owe a big lump next year, but I've spent it.
Pretty much everything I pay is PAYE. I took redundancy in the spring, which leaves you with a whacking great tax bill the next year, but I have no interest yielding investments, so my tax return is easy.
I think my total investment return last year was rounded down from £1.46 to £1

HAlf you git mines worth 27% FFS...
Id have been better off buying the very first tuscan leaving it parked on the street for 2 years with the roof off and then trading it in for a ford focus, i'd still have made more money than my ISA......
And they have the gall to keep charging the management fee....
