This is a must see prog , i caught it on Discovery last night it basically gives a potted history of F1 from Auto Union days to the present , featuring Williams quite heavily .
I had a few illusions shattered as a kid i thought the BRM V16`s were all conquering , it turns out that after the war the British gov took the plans from Mercedes and Auto Union and helped form BRM and that the BRM was basically a copy of zee German cars , to quote Mr. Caine "Not a lot of people knew that"

Yeah I watched the first half of that - until my flatmates came in and forced me to watch Predator (again!) I was very interested to see that the Government actually had their spies/secret service go in and take the research and write up a report.
They must have thought Fastcars and Motorsport were pivotal in those days - :sigh: how times change!!

Sad but true ,,,,,, unbelivable stuff.
And if we think F1 is not competitive today, Mercedes winning by over 5 mins
One clip that made me cringe was Rosemayer on a re-fueling stop when he got about 2 gallons of gas down the back of his neck followed by a bucket of water from the pit crew , how would the prima donas deal with that i wonder , ahh back in the days when men were men .

erm,... not exactly spies, just boffins. The report was published by HMSO and Raymond Mays & Co nipped down the shops and bought a copy (it was recently re-issued).
BRM tried to copy the way Mercedes was organised, rather than cribbing the engineering. Not being a well-funded, highly organised, state-aided industry, they failed.

OK the way they put it and as the pics proved the BRM look very like , and was described as a copy of the Mercedes , they cocked it up by putting the over complicated V16 engine it it

Nigel Mansell suffered a leaking fuel bag on his debut with Lotus, and spent the race sitting in a puddle of petrol, picking up serious petrol burns. And that was on top of his recovering broken back...
Unlike Piquet, who was happy to sit in a puddle of his own p**s, and managed to rot the bottom out of his car!
