Best budget portable Minidisc?

Going to be looking into getting a minidisc player/recorder, can anyone recommend a budget one and the best place to buy it?

Portable or full size?
I'm after a full size unit to replace my portable which has died, shortly after the warrenty ran out
Sony MDSJE-480 for £99 from Richer Sounds seems quite good

Minidiscs are shite! Get an MP3 jobbie.

IMNSHO of course...

Each to their own, but if you have to buy something which you need to transfer all your CDs onto, be it minidisc or MP3, you might as well go for the one which does not require you do buy ludicrously priced blank discs and can also played on your PC - ie MP3!

All this logic is of course lost on Mrs Zee who has a Minidisc head-unit, portable minidisc player and a Minidisc hifi..

It’s intended for the girlfriend for Christmas, I was thinking minidisc as she could plug it into her new car, also listen to it at work, don’t have a PC for the MP3 stuff so thought a minidisc would be easiest.

Me too I'm afraid CarZ, mp3's are crap, anything you get off Morpheus is cack, cobbled together by some bored pubescent teenager who can't afford proper disk space, so you end up with some cacky 64k rubbish that sounds tinny to the extreme.

I've a MD recorder and player, and find them truly indispensable. OK, so they're a bit bigger than an mp3 player, but can you bang an mp3 recorder into the optical out on your cd and cut to your heart's content ?

Fair enough, but you're not comparing like with like...

I'm talking about sampling your CD collection at 192Kbps which is the same bandwidth as a MD uses anyway!

Moot eitherway, but I strongly object to such proprietary cack as minidiscs.. I mean why can you not connect them to a PC as a data device?

Hmm, I have a recording minidisc which is great, and oddly I bought from Richer Sounds a few years back. It is a mature technology, easy to use and relativly cheap.

I also have a "Creative Labs Nomad Juebox Zen" MP3, WMA player (yes that is its name). This thing is the size of some minidisk players, but instead has a 20Gig harddrive and a 12 hour battery life. What this means is I can copy via my PC about 6000 tracks at a good sample rate, and for most people 600 Albums is more than enough. It aslo plugs into the car stereo, handy for long journeys.

My verdict is they are both good. In both cases you need to copy from a source onto the player, if its the minidisk you can use:hifi, computer etc. But my MP3 I need a PC to copy with, but that is not the same fo all MP3 players.


However, some of the new Sony Minidisk players also connect to PCs and store MP3 on the disk, so that is the best of both worlds, oh, and connect to the internet via a PC to download tracks.

Another plug for Richer sounds from me - Always good stuff at some really good prices - blank discs are maega cheap there too

You can with some of the Sony ones (I think). But why would you want to, ferrchissake ? You either:

1) Set up a loopback and copy 'twixt;
2) Use a proper DSD like a Jazz drive;
3) Burn it to CD (you tightwad !);
4) Invest in a wireless LAN;
5) Send via e mail and retrieve via joys of ADSL (collective sore point here old boy...)
