Dealing with a Dumped Car

Someone has kindly dumped their unwanted scrap in the car park at our flats (24 flats with about 23 car park spaces).

We thought we had the registered owner tracked down (by checking with DVLA) only to find it sold to a garage and sold on from them to another individual (as yet un-named).

We've checked with the BiB - who were quite happy to advise that we have every right to remove it from private property. Of course, they don't want to have anything to do with it (and as a taxpayer I'd be happy that they use their time more fruitfully employed).

We are just coming to decision time - and looking for the least expensive and most painless solution.

Top of the favourites list is to get together round the pub one night and when we are suitably "Mungoed-up" we could divert our attention to moving it somewhere a bit more "interesting" (although we're worried about being caught on CCTV).

Next favourite is to try and sell/give it away for salvage. (Of course we have no V5 or other ownership documentation!)

Also in the running is to carry on trying to pursue the rightful owner and charge a suitable parking fee!

I think we pretty much ruled out anything too illegal - like torching or whatever!

Any other good suggestions, chaps and chappesses? Any free legal advice welcome.

Oh, and it's a "Fat" Punto btw - had it been anything more attractive we'd have come to a decision by now.

Hire a skip,between 25(12yd should do) not much and put in skip.

Put a suspicious looking package on the back seat with some curly wires coming out of it and call the bomb squad , they should deal with it quite nicely

I'd suggest calling the council department who deal with it (ours is called Transportation Services). They work with the DVLA and will come and remove the car.

We had a manky old Fiesta obviously abandoned (open doors, no tax etc.) around 30 yards from our front door, called the council who came to collect it, unfortunately after some scumbags decided it was fun to light it up

Turns out Greenwich have a two week waiting list for collection at the moment.

BUT The government are thinking of looking at the problem and speeding up the removal process.

Arn't you able to request a new V5 from the DVLA or something, think I saw it on a thread similar to this sometime ago... Then you would own the car and could do what you want with it

Tow it onto the Public Highway. Leave it about 3 feet out from the kerb. It will not be long before the authorities move it !

Put an ad in the free section in the local paper offering it free to anyone who want to collect it.

Just phone your local recovery/wreckers yard, it's such, common problem they do it all day every day, the going rate is about £25 locally and they don't ask about V5's etc just is it private property and are you the owner of the property.

You could always test which speed cameras have film in them?

If you can't find the owner after an attempt, I think you can claim ownership of the vehicle. In any case, get a V5 if it is a working car, and if the owner does turn up the V5 only proves who the keeper is(not ownership). He would need to take you to court to claim ownership and you would then counter by claiming the fee for leaving it there (although you need to prove a sign was outside saying so). Change the locks and keys and either sell it or use it. But if it doesn't start or drive, then £25 to a scrappy will do the job. If its in decent nick they might even pay you.

Also, you can try pushing it into the road and removing the reg plates. Council has to deal with cars without reg plates first. If you can get it to drive, I might have it off you

A friend of mine didnt want her Renault 5 anymore so she called them and they turned up with a wagon and removed it free of charge.

Its apparently an initiative that the London boroughs have set up to stop people dumping cars.

Not sure where you are location wise but its got to be worth a shout.

If you can catch a fire station at work, then see if they will take it (they may require the legal documents though) as they are desperate for cars to practice their cutting techniques.

We've got enough in Leeds as it is thanks.

There are 2 outside my flat. I rang the police to report them and was told one of them had some sort of outstanding file note on it. They're still in the same place after about 6 months.

The road where I live is not covered by the Highways Authority for some reason. We had a car dumped in one of the precious spaces for at least a year which was a complete eye sore in a fairly nice area. The police couldnt do anything, cos it wasnt on a public road. And would you believe it, by the next day it was on a public road , and causing an obstruction. So the police sent a recovery truck and took it back to their compound, where searches began to find the owner and charge them a large amount for storage charges. job done.

Hmmmmmmmm Industrial estate and forklift truck ! It's enough to bring a look of glee to Carzee's face and send him scurrying for his camera, shame I didn't get any victims that day but it has happened.
