Did anyone watch it??
I actually really enjoyed seeing Britain do what it used to do best. Don't let the barstewards get away with anything.
Best quote was near the end, after the seige was over all the SAS went into debriefing with a few beers, when Maggie and Dennis turned up. They were all watching it on the news and one SAS man said that he couldn't see because someone was in his way. So he shouts over, move your F
ing head.
Maggie turns round and says... "sorry" and moves her head. Quality. Can you imagine Blair doing that. Maggie had balls whatever her other faults may have been. Blair is just a limp wristed fcukwit.

Somewhat controversially nowadays I guess, "For Queen and country". Something that was instilled in me, and I fully and strongly beleive in. Shame about her PM though!

It may not be to everones taste I realise that, but there is a point in any situation when there is no alternative, at which point you WILL NEED them. If these are the good guys then I'm glad I not a bad guy
. I think when the final details of one of the SAS RSM's action in Afganistan are made public then it should make every anyone who has any doubts as to the quality of these guys think again, if not, then try another country

The leader of the SAS embassy siege was asked on TV news whether or not he thought the current Hackney siege should be given a similar ending. He was adament that the Met are doing it correctly and said that gunmen should be left alone to sort out his destiny.
A rather different attitude to that reflected on our site but clearly one based upon real life experience.
The siege would have been perfect had it not set fire to the building and had one of the absailers not become hooked up. I understand later special forces pyrotechnics are less likely to ignite furnishings etc and the ropes and gizmos have been much improved. Although I hope the boys don't have to risk their lives again their professionalism is certainly a joy to recount.

I watched it both times and it is an excellent documentary. No dramatisation. It really was worth the effort the reporters put in to find SAS people who would talk on camera about it. You can tell these guys are being honest about what happened because you can see their faces and hear them talk without distortion. The policeman who was caught inside (he was the lone duty officer to the embassy) is excellent and you can really see how personally he took the fact that it happened on his watch and how much emotion he put into trying to get a peaceful ending.

One of the final comments was perfect. (paraphrased) "It showed the worlds terrorists what would happen if they attempt this sort of thing in the UK. IE you are not going to get out alive".
It only seems like a couple of months since this was last on! (I could check the previous thread and so when, of course).
I wonder if it was repeated to coincide with the latest siege, or if it was pre-planned?

Good programme.
As for Britain doing what it does best, well the training and quality of our armed forces (and specifically our special forces) is without doubt very high.
Shame that the orders given were to kill all on site on sight (the two who surrendered inside were put face up against the wall and shot having already surrendered their weapons and waved a white flag out of the window, as verified by the hostages and the video) the guy who got out only survived because the media were watching.
These two who surrendered in the building died purely for political expediency, less loose ends to deal with etc. I completely understand that this wasn't anything to do with the SAS, they had their orders, they carried them out very impressively.
Historically it looks like then right decisions were made and the overall outcome was a respounding sucess.
I just hope that I never get shot by someone having surrendered because they can't be arsed to deal with the paperwork......

Superb program. The SAS are the dogs. That Scottish one, Mal I think, looks like a real tough B*****d.

I think it was more to send a message to terrorists that if you take hostages in this country you will be killed.
More of a deterrent to anyone else who wants to try it.

It wasn't the paperwork, it was a rather obvious statement - do that kind of thing in the UK and a limit will be reached beyond which no mercy can be expected - this goes beyond any nice, warm comfortable liberal opinions anyone may harbour about these people's so-called rights. The white flag of surrender should have been waved BEFORE anyone got hurt- don't forget these scum had mercilessly executed a hostage. You cannot go to extreme lengths of barbarity and then just stand up waving a white flag expecting the treatment you blatantly failed to give your own captives. And what a deterrent that action was - the risks taken by the troopers was well worth it given that the few major hostage situations in the UK since have more or less ended quicklyand peacefully because of the Sword of Damocles hanging over any terrorists.
The Hackney siege is difficult because the risks were high - one problem being that although the chap did die the message that seems to come out of it is that the Met are too scared to risk lives in order to save lives.
