Sort fo a crosspost, but I thought it merited seperate discussion as I didn't know this until now..

From today's Times, at the bottom of the article about HH's speeding offence:

John Prescott, the Deputy Prime Minister, has four speeding convictions, the last in 1997 when he drove at 80mph on a 30mph section of the icy M62 motorway. He said that he was going to a constituency surgery and did not want to keep people waiting in the cold.

Errrm.. 80 in a 30? surely not..

Where is the justice in this world. They could jali him for 18 months for dangerous driving at high speeds. If that was anyone under the age of 35, banned, jailed and probably fined. I hate these ministers etc.

So you can't go below that speed, but you can't exceed it either.

have to say I don't think there is a 30 section on the M62 near Hull.. probably an advisory limit which means he was stopped not becuase he was speeding but because he was driving dangerously for the conditions.

Imelda - ISTR from my Norvern road warrior days that there's nasty highlevel bridge over some river (near Goole) between Leeds & Hull on the M62.. in high winds and with icy conditions, it's perfectly reasonable to put up 30 on the matrices there..

there's no set minimum speed on the motorway, for fairly obvious reasons, but if you'recausing an obstruction by considerably lagging behind the flow of traffic, you can be done for DWDCAT or similar I think..

bear with me - I'm gonna look this up on Lexis Nexis, see if I can find the original press that this occurence got...

Interesting... I always remember being told the minimum speed was 50mph, unless roadworks / safety dictated otherwise...

There is no minimum speed per-se on a motorway but there are restrictions on certain vehicles that are not equipped to travel at above certain speeds.

Can't be 50mph, bearing in mind artics are limited to 56mph top whack. The slightest incline has them dropping below this. Anyhoooo, has spoken, and he should know.

Highway code says minimum speed on a motorway is 30mph

Well you have been seriously misinformed. How can you achieve a minimum speed if everything, due to congestion is travelling well below that speed?

Everyone would then be committing an offence, therefore there is no minimum limit.

it isnt, but Im sure madcop et al can answer - would it be possible to nick people for dangerous driving below a level?

I ask as - wait for it - I and others JUST avoided fatal multi car pile up, when we came up behind a woman doing 45mph in THE MIDDLE LANE!!! with a truck on her leftlane+behind, furiously flashing her to pull back in.

I was going to call the police and warn them, but I regret I didnt, I thought they wouldnt be interested -madcop - would you/the police overall be interested in getting a call for this?

OK, that makes sense... but in the assumption that most people drive at 70mph (ahem) is there anything in place to allow plod to pull over people / numpties who are sat at 30mph - if conditions permit people to travel more quickly... my concern being the closing speed.

Have they scrapped the old 40mph minimum then Madcop?

So look out for an 80mph minimum being introduced in the next session of parliament ... while they're dropping the maximum to 100km/h
