Around this time of year, if you’re a miserable bastard, you’ll be going round telling everyone how Christmas is a total waste of money; how it’s all too commercial; how all the big chains and their out of town shopping resorts have turned the festive season into nothing more than a big hole in your bank account which gets filled back up with imported plastic crap. Well, if that’s you then I bring glad tidings because it’s official: the shops have eaten themselves. So successful have they become at selling tat that even the miserable bastards are buying it, and in such hordes that now nobody can even get to the shops. How do I know all of this? Because I am one of those miserable bastards and I’ve been sat in my car one scant mile from junction seventeen of the M5 for the last three and a half hours and I’ve moved a massive three inches. I only set out with the intention of buying a few cheap gifts for close relatives but all I’ve done is sat looking at the couple from hell in the brand new Audi TT in front of me jumping up and down full of festive cheer, singing Christmas carols with the windows wide open. Bastards. I hope they fill up with diesel by mistake.
