Thanks for the responses - there's no high level of humidity inside the car (it's not a tiv 
) and the problem doesn't seem to improve with time. I just checked the recirc and found that the tell-tale light isn't working so the answer to dennisthemenace's Q is that I don't know!! I will experiment with this today and report back

It could be that a filter has become blocked. A friend of mine has an Astra which was constantly fogged up so badly that she had to drive with the windows open all the time – a bit chilly at this time of year! An AA man suggested changing the pollen filter on the cabin air intake. Halfords changed the filter for about £17 and the problem immediately disappeared. The blocked filter was stopping fresh dry air coming in and causing recirculation of damp air already in the car.
Is the aircon drain clear?
This is basically a pipe that collects moisture condensing on the interior cooler and drains it to a pipe outside.
With the aircon running, engine running too, take a look under the car and see if you can spot what looks to be like a water leak.
If you can see this happening or after its been parked, then it would indicate the drain is clear, if not, then possibly blocked.

Hutch, this is fairly common wityh Fords. If you haven't used it for a while (the a/c) you can get excessive condensate build up which sits there all night and dampens things (this is the source of the moisture). Worth checking condensate drain tube. It happened to me once in my wife's KA. Mopped the screen down, used the a/c and it cleared and hasn't returned. Worth asking about it at the local Ford dealer - there's probably a TSB issued on it.

Couldn't see any condensate dripping out of the tube and from inspection it looked like it could have been blocked - with ice?? Over the cold spell the car's only been back and forward to school and Tescos - probably never properly warmed through so any condensation may have frozen in the tube. The car had a good run today - having ensured the recirc was off (handbook said this goes out automatically if the front heated windscreen is on) - on the way home the windows completely cleared. Presumably the ice blockage cleared. So mystery solved - and all I need to do is fix the tell-tale in the recirc button.
