does anyone have any experience of these obnoxious little buggers, my sons car keeps overheating, I've put a new stat in and purged the radiator, all airlock traps have been checked and now the f**king alternator belt has snapped (again)and water was pissing out of the radiator pressure relief cap

Wet linered engine.
Used to work on these and saw many problems with warped heads and dodgy liner seals.
If all the air has been bled from the system, try taking off the rad cap while the engines running( be careful!!!) and see if the system is getting pressurised by combustion pressures.
Indicates a damaged head gasket or cracked liner/s.
Easy to see if theres too much pressure being developed in the system cos itll spew out all over the place even when cold.
Could be costly if taken in for repair, but is within scope for a home mechanic.
Dont forget to lock the crank and cam with the correct tools to prevent piston to valve contact, thats if you decide to do the job yourself.
Hope this helps you some.

f**k, f**k, f**k!! took the rad cap off and as you said water exploded everywhere, I assumed that, because there was no mayonaise in the water or oil that the head gasket was intact. The car had recently been in to have the main shells changed but don't think the head was touched. I'm not working at the mo so can't help him with this. The mains went 5 days after buying the car and the garage tried to get out of the repair by saying the car had been driven harshly, a letter to the finance company sorted that out, I feel my son has bought a lemon but he loves the bloody thing

Try starting the engine from cold apache, without the rad cap on and see if it still blows out all over the place. If so, then its a def head gasket fault.
Interesting ya say that the bearings were done recently too, cos i was thinking that if theyd got the head off it at the time, and they were rotating the crank over, this can cause probs with the liner seals, cos the piston shoves the liner out of its location.
On the bright side is the fact that theyre not a hard job to do M8, usually a few hours with some help, but give it a day of easy going if ya not a whizz on the spanners.
It would be a good idea if ya decide to take it on, to get the head lightly skimmed before replacement.

If you even vaguely suspect its a lemon get rid of it and find him another one - I suffered for 6 months at the hands of the dealer with my first 944 until eventually I had to sell it to another dealer with all the faults on display at a loss of £3000.

Get rid now if its only a recent purchase...

deltaf, just gone out and tried it cold with the cap off, the water level rose in the expansion tank(about 1cm / sec) but didn't shoot out, does this still point to the liners/head gasket?, also there doesn't seem to be any crap in the water.

loserkid, believe me I would if I could, to be fair the car is in good order and quite rare so if it is just an issue with the above it might be worth another chance

apache, just checking;

the engine was cold,
you took the cap off,
started the engine,
water rose as the engine was running.

The water rises as it warms up, although 1cm a second seems a bit quick. A def. sign of head gasket/seal trouble would be bubbles coming up into the header. It would be worth taking it to a garage, to check for combustion gasses in the coolant (they can pass the air through a fluid that changes colour if comb. gasses are present).

Another sign to look out for, is there a lot of condensation/steam coming out of the exhaust. If yes, then this also points to water and the cylinders mixing.

also there doesn't seem to be any crap in the water.

Sorry mate, that doesn't tell you anything about your problem here.

clotted cream/cr@p in the coolant or on the dipstick means that oil and water are mixing through a broken seal somewhere. Your problem seems to be air and water mixing. It all depends on which particular bit of the head gasket is leaking.
HTH.

I used to have a white N Reg 106 rallye when they were new pete, and ragged it remorselessly for the first year of its life, was the only way to drive it.

Mine was a 1.3 but went like brown stuff off a shovel.

It might be worth a call to a peugeot sport specialist such as LAD in lancaster / morecambe to cheekily ask for a bit of advice, they get cars taken in from all over the UK and specialise in Gti's and Rallye's.
