Train services to be axed
LONDON (Reuters) - More than 100 daily train services are to be cut under plans to ease congestion on the ailing network, the rail regulator says. The Strategic Rail Authority said on Thursday that the cuts were designed to improve reliability and punctuality, but unions condemned the changes.
"This is looking at where there are problems in terms of capacity and how things can be improved if we plan better," an SRA spokeswoman said. The cuts, which the SRA will detail later today, will affect services across the country. Union chiefs said the cuts were "deplorable" and would hit passengers hard.
"This is no way to deliver on plans to ensure greater use of railways," Mick Rix, general secretary of the ASLEF train drivers' union, said in a statement. Passengers have suffered delays and disruption after a string of fatal crashes in recent years and the collapse of rail network operator Railtrack in October 2001.
The government has allocated 33.5 billion pounds to spend on railways over 10 years and wants to increase passenger numbers by 50 percent over the same period.

Nice one Knut, £30 for a box seat is very reasonable. Its just the £4 on the tube it costs each way that seems a bit much to take to travel less than 4 miles!

Spent quite a lot of time in Zurich a while ago. Train, busses and trams are cheap, clean and on time. 9/10 times you get off one and have a few minutes to wait for your connection. At rush hour, they are crowded, but far more frequent so its usually not a problem to wait for the next one.
If I were still there, I'd have the TVR, but it would be a weekend/evening car as the public transport is so efficient I'd just not need it.

I think 'Train Congestion Charging' is the way to go, the only way to control rail travel.
Charge people, say £5.00, each time there is overcrowding at a station or on a train.
Reduce the time train doors are kept open, and the speed at which trains are allowed to travel to create congestion and encourage users to seek alternative forms of transport.
There are clearly too many train users in this country and they need to be reduced.
Think of all the carbon dioxide pollution they give off, and not to mention the noise pollution of all those people talking, breathing etc.
Trains are also a danger to our children, as they cross the tracks on their way to skiving off school. Think of the children.

I actually think this is a good idea.
Consider this.....
Those 100 train services will never be late or overcrowded again. Problem solved.
