Well well well... it seems that Ken's getting nervous about the sheer number of motorists converting to LPG in order to evade the congestion charges..

Ken Livingstone's officials have threatened to abolish a loophole permitting "green" cars to escape the London mayor's £5-a-day congestion charge amid signs that thousands of the capital's motorists are developing a new-found concern for the planet.
A clause in the charging scheme, which begins on February 17, allows vehicles using alternative fuels to enter central London without paying.

The get-out clause has prompted a flurry of motorists and corporate fleets to convert their vehicles to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The energy saving trust, a government-funded body which offers grants for green vehicles, has seen weekly applications soar by 80% since November.

A spokesman for Mr Livingstone's Transport for London authority said the mayor's advisers were "keeping a pretty damn close eye" on the trend. He pointed out that the congestion charge was supposed to stop traffic jams in the capital, rather than merely reducing pollution.

"If the exemption gets out of hand, we will act," he said. "That could mean tinkering with the charge.

This was in the Evening Standard yesterday aswell. The increased level of LPG application has only gone up 20 a day which is hardly a level which will threaten London congestion initially, although Ken will attempt to get money in any way.

To be honest, why the hell shouldn't LPG cars pay it anyway. It is a Congestion Charge, not a fuel charge, or propulsion charge.

Shouldn't be exempt in the first place. If I change the Griffith to run on Olive Oil and fag butts will it take up any less space than the when it drank 187 litres of Shells best for taking don Oxford ST.

Ken is also rather concerned about another consequence of his Con. Charge ...

10 in 1000 scooter riders are killed in the capitol each year. Scooters go free, so inevitably there will be a significant increase in the numbers of scooters in use ...

Ken has set himself the target of reducing road death/accidentsin the capitol by 40% (I think) by the end of 2005. Hence now he is shitting himself he is going to be unable to succeed as all the mad scooter types are going to be throwing themselves down the roads of the capitol and buggering those plans up....

So watch bikers of the capitol, he'll be targetting you once the Charge is in !

Interestingly, if I converted my Primula, it'd only be in funding band 3, hence would get 30% funding and no congestion charge exepmption..

OTOH a 4700CC Jeep Cherokee is in band 4, getting 40% conversion subsidy and full CC exemption..
