Builder cuts his head off in DIY guillotine

A HORROR-STRUCK dad went to wake his son and found he had chopped off his head with a guillotine.
Builder Boyd Taylor, 36, was found in a pool of blood at the foot of an 8ft by 3ft home-made contraption — modelled on those used in the French Revolution.
He had carefully assembled a heavy blade with a network of wooden planks and levers — and stabilised it with paving stones.
And he set up an electric timer to trigger the guillotine at 3.30am as he lay on an airbed underneath.
His father, also called Boyd, got no answer from his son’s room when he left for work on Monday.
When he returned later that afternoon he went in to Boyd’s bedroom and discovered the gruesome scene.
It is thought Mr Taylor, in his late 50s, was not aware his son had been building the guillotine.
He was too upset to talk about the tragedy at their small cottage near Ponteland, Northumberland, yesterday.
Neighbours were stunned when they heard the news.
One couple who had work carried out on their house by the Taylors said: “This is just awful.
“The father will be devastated because for years it has just been the two of them living there and working together. Their work was exceptional.”
The tragedy is being treated as a bizarre suicide.
