Flying lessons
Discussion
I've been looking into this too lately, I found www.cabair.com/promotion/html/fw_lessons.htm
Roop is taking flying lessons. he had to have a medical first.
His club is at Staverton airfield in Glos, where that vet guy who builds his own cars/plane ets got his licence. Roop uses the Katana for his lessons - should anything go wrong it can glide as well.

If anyone is happy to fly only in the UK but are worried about medical fitness then take a look at the National Private Pilots Licence It is only valid in the UK but basically if your doctor says you are ok - the same with driving if you have a medical condition - then you can get the licence (subject to passing etc etc).

I love flying.
I was an Air cadet from the age of 13, and I also took private lessons. I had 20 hours of flying (about half the minimum)...
...Then I got into cars. Those hours are now worthless. However, if I had the time and the cash I would almost certainly start it again.
Where abouts are you?? talk to a few flying schools before joining one...

Between London, N.Y and Miami. Does getting a license in the UK differ to getting it in the U.S? If so is one more "valuable" i.e harder to obtain than the other(like the driving licenses)? I would prefer the harder test as I would like to be very well trained. Not much margin for error you see.

2 different licenses. UK only accepts CAA US accepts both CAA and their own FAA. If you have limited time over here, I'd do the FAA one in the states but make sure you get one thats pproved by the CAA. I think there is one or maybe 2 extra exams. Reason for taking the US one is that if you are serious about flying, you'll get it sorted far more quickly there as the weather is so much better. Heard it takes a fortnight or so.
Either way, lost of ground school to do. I've a few urls around somewhere that might help with that..
Edited to add - Can see Gaffer's point.. Still think I'd do it over the pond, but would get a few hours in over here with an instructor in more marginal weather.. It takes a lot longer to get the hours in over here. I get more hours in the air (paragliders) in a couple of weeks overseas than I do in the rest of the year here.

ahhh flying... if I am asked to chose between sex and flying, I always check the weather..
Seriously though, I am a professional pilot and would advise getting your medical sorted before hand and then asking the different schools about pricing/ type of aircraft + age, how many instructors they have and pass rates for the checkrides. Also when you chose one, don't pay the full course price upfront as flying schools have a funny habit of going bankrupt (and sinking your money also..) Fly at a smaller airport as you then minimize the time taxiing around and waiting in queues (all paid by you, so you want to maximise time flying)
If you are not quite sure if you want to fly, then get an introduction lesson and buy the text books for all the subjects so you can get your head down and study before starting ground school. Budget for about 5-10 hours more flying lessons then required by law, as almost nobody does it in the minimum required (plan at least 2 lessons per week otherwise you will be going 3 steps forward and 2 back..)
I love my job, I fly private learjets at work and do track days on my days off... Nothing better than popping thru the overcast into the sunshine at 300knots climbing like a bat out of hell...bliss

Sorry.
Out of interest, how much would this set you back? Also any approx annual costs (servicing, running)roughly 4x3hr flights per month. www.privatair.com/aircraft_sales/aircraft_sales_detail_eid_116_lid_16.htm

I was flying a Lear last night !! So there !! and a Cessna and a B777 and a Mig21 and, and, and, and, and a P51.... Ah the joys of Flight Simulator 2002 !!
Another professional pilot here - albeit with wings that go around as opposed to the fixed variety. My advice would be to look at some of the smaller airfields - there are quite a lot of guys trying to build up their hours who will do some instruction at a fairly reduced rate to assist both parties.

To quote a line from American Beauty, 'I think you just became my personal hero'.
Difficult to see I've gone green with envy as I'm so bunged up with flu right now..
I will resist asking what kind of money I'd need to get into that line of work..
My missus ( bless her little cotton socks ) has sorted me a lesson out as a crimbo present from Sheffield Airport. Cessna 152 I think. Did about 8hrs from Netherthorpe when I was 14-15yrs old. Long time ago ! Hope this trial lesson does not give me the bug again ! I've been swatting up on my ground school stuff in hope that they will treat the 1hr trial fairly seriously. No point in going over the effects of control and all that stuff 'cause I know it. Hence the FS2002 ! I've been flyying circuits from Sheffield Airport for the last 2 weeks or so. Good practice !
