Police knife attacker barricaded in flat
A knifeman barricaded with another person in a Brighton flat is the same man who attacked two police officers on Monday. The man slashed two constables across the face in the city.
The injured officers were hunting a suspected burglar who had targeted a hair salon in Western Street on Monday night.
Inquiries led Pcs Luise Tate and Ian Upperton to another address in Sillwood Place, where they were confronted by a man who attacked them with a four-inch knife. Pc Upperton was cut across his forehead while Pc Tate's glasses saved her from serious injury when she too was slashed across the face.
The attacker, who was sprayed with Captor pepper spray, escaped through a window and was not traced despite a major search.
Today police were in position outside the flat in Whitehawk Way where it is thought the knifeman is holed up. Officers were called to the address shortly after midnight.
A Sussex Police spokesman said: "Police are dealing with an incident in East Brighton in which a man armed with a knife has barricaded himself inside a ground floor flat.
"There is a second man in the flat, but it is not clear at this stage whether he is being held against his will.
"Police are negotiating with the man with the knife in order to bring the incident, which started just after midnight, to a peaceful conclusion.
"We can confirm that we believe the man with the knife was the person responsible for the attack on two Brighton and Hove police officers."
now then.. he slashes 2 coppers in the face and they spray him with fcuking pepper spray because of the 'rights of the suspect' and 'proportionality'. Bollocks to that.
Now, if they'd have beaten the shit out of him with batons or shot him, would he now be in a hostage situation or would he be answering questions from a hospital bed, looking rather sorry for himself?
A fine example of the softly softly approach being exploited wittingly or otherwise by crims who know that coppers have to treat them with kid gloves.
I hope they send a team in today and cut this fcuker to pieces.

To be fair Whitehawk estate has a notorious reputation and it could only be considered a good thing if this seige was to last for weeks and the surrounding neighbours to be barricaded in their own homes for a long long long time!

I completely agree. The police (contrary to some opinions) are people as well, and people with a very tough job to do.
That said, they have the same legal right to use reasonable and proportional force to defend themselves that everyone else does.
I very rarely see this exercised and nine times out of ten admirable restraint is shown in not kicking the living crap out of some of these scumbags.

Police in riot gear have arrested a man after he gave himself up at a flat which had been besieged by officers hunting a knife attacker.
The 29-year-old man emerged from the front door and was led away for questioning about an attack on Monday, when two police officers were slashed across their faces.
The man was arrested more than two hours after a 16-year-old youth was able to leave the first floor flat in Brighton through an open window. The youth, who is thought to live at the flat, was not arrested.
The 13 hour-long operation to remove the man had involved more than 35 police officers and police dog teams. Armed officers were also on standby.
Chief Inspector Lisa Pearcey, of Sussex Police, said: "One of the police support unit officers managed to convince him to leave the premises.
"There were no injuries, which shows that we took the right approach to this situation. From the manner of the operation it was clear that he wasn't going anywhere but with us."
The siege began shortly after midnight when officers visited the flat in Whitehawk Way, Brighton. Chief Inspector Pearcey said: "A man produced a knife and at that stage we withdrew."
