EU Rule Forces 'Too High' Park Swings to Close

A British parish council has been forced to close its playground swings, used by hundreds of children a year, because a European Union rule says they are 2 feet too high.

The three swings exceed the maximum height order set by Brussels bureaucrats which says swings should be no more than 9 feet, 11 inches high.

The swings, at a park in Wiltshire, southwest England, were put up 25 years ago.

"The ruling has come as a bombshell," Parish Council Chairman Toby Sturgis told Reuters, noting there had been no accidents on the swings for 25 years.

and the gutless, spineless nanny state council hasn't even the guts to poke to vertically separated fingers at the EU?????

Invasion of Brussels anyone?

I am starting to think though that this sort of thing is actually good, because the more and more people that get pissed off by the EU clap trap the more people will raise an eyebrow to the UKIP.

You know.. if I hadn't seen Mrs Fish & JMGS4 in the flesh, I'd have sworn the former is an alter ego of the latter

The reason the swings had to be closed is that this playground clearly goes against the 'equality of opportunity' ideal, as espoused by Blair and the EU.

If every child had the opportunity to go on swings that were too tall and no child was excluded from the opportunity to sustain cuts, grazes & possible concussion or sprained ankle, then there'd be no problem..

But we can't just have some isolated elitist playgrounds where state educated children are disadvantaged by having insufficient access. It's deeply discriminatory and must be stamped out.

Can't the council just put up a sign saying "THIS IS NOT A SWING".

FCUK Europe red tape.

Johnny Fartypants in the neighbouring village must be well happy kids from the next village can no longer have a higher (better) swing than his village.

The real problem is that now if little Jonny falls off and cuts his knee, his parents encouraged by some ambulance chasing cable channel advertising vulture will embark on a claim against the council for their "illegal" swings. They will then win a massive pay out to keep mum and dad in fags and beer for several months. The council have no choice but to close the swings.

Anyone remember the 'survivalist' guy in the original Highlander film, crawling the streets of New York or somewhere in his Trans Am, vigilante style, sub machine gun at the ready, his intent amply conveyed by a T-shirt with mock bullet holes and the exclamation, 'Hey, Moscow!'?

I suspect this type of lunacy will produce a legion of such people - and not just in Blighty - whose message will be similarly conveyed, albeit addressed to Brussels.

Let's get out and get out now. What a shocking bunch of petty insects.

You simply despair...

I'm soo glad we have the wise and worldly folk in Brussels to make our stoopid descisions for us...

...don't they trust to do that for ourselves?

I'm waiting for the "Brussles decree: It will from henceforth be illeagal to take a dump while sitting down. Inspectors will be sent to every builing in the Eurpoean Union and replace illicit toilets with "squatting CarZees"*".

I'm glad Tax payers' money is safe, aren't you?

... but then you get into the issue, that you KNOW the swing is unsafe... so you can be sued...

Edited to provide basic plot for the new Hollywood blockbuster called "DerestrictorMan, Enough is Enough", starring our very own northern Hoonster, Holly Valance and Kylie.

Did you know that in a 20-year period in excess of 64,000 regulations have been introduced in the UK and in most of Europe by the "EU". Does this mean that 20 years ago, the country we lived in was so sh!te that it has taken in excess of 64,000 regulations to create a place worth living in...?
