Blair fury as Mugabe is invited to France
A new row erupted today between Tony Blair and President Chirac - after France sent a warm invitation to President Robert Mugabe to a Paris summit.
The invitation to next month's event flies in the face of the international effort, led by Britain, to make the Zimbabwe leader a global pariah because of his human rights abuses.
It also flouts a European Union visa ban on the Zimbabwe leadership.
The move was instantly condemned by Britain. International Development Secretary Clare Short told the Commons that it was just "not right". No10 and the Foreign Office were caught on the hop as it became clear that Britain had been neither consulted nor informed. The Tories demanded that Mr Blair wield the UK's veto to block the trip.
The row marks the latest slump in the extraordinary up-and-down relationship between Mr Blair and President Chirac. Last year saw an bizarre clash at a gathering of EU leaders when M Chirac, angered after tough exchanges over Iraq and EU farm prices, told Mr Blair he had never been spoken to so rudely.
M Chirac then called off a planned Anglo-French summit but, after conciliatory words from Mr Blair, the event will take place in two weeks.
On current plans, President Mugabe will stride onto the red carpet in Paris just two weeks later, an event that now threatens to blight any effort by Mr Blair and M Chirac to reconcile.

How much more evidence do the idiots who support a Euro superstate need to ably demonstrate the whitewash it would undoubtedly be?
Let's stop doing an ostrich and realise the contempt Chirac and many of his countryfolk have for Blighty.
This isn't a xenophobic tirade 'cos I happen to adore 'Le France' but on a political level there is something quite deep seated about their attitude to us.
They often slate British arrogance; well, touche! What's the problem? Agincourt? Poitiers? Cresy? The Anglo-American ass saving exercise in 1944? The fact that we retained our monarchy?
You know, it's just the same as their disdain for what they see as the American cultural invasion via McD's, Coca Cola, Pizza Hut and Gawd knows how many other franchised global businesses. And how does Chirac respond to Dubya & Co re Iraq (whatever the rights & wrongs of military action?) - simple: he stands by his German buddy with a resolute proclamation of inaction.
That's about it; Europe: it's b*llocks - so let's make like a tree and get outta there...

This just smacks of 'tit-for-tat' diplomacy.
Chirac is using Mgbe to piss Blair off, IMHO to make the French point about their differences over Iraq. I predict nowt will come of it, apart from Blair looking a bit of a berk, and Mgbe getting to open his mouth on French TV and damn himself in the eyes of the French as he does so.

Well, if you say this then I suppose there's nothing in your country worth being saved from the US's "cultural invasion".

It might be "b*llocks" but who's going to complain in a few tenths of years when the US will have gone bankrupted, stirring in their demise their european henchmen?
Anyway, back to topic: chirac is an a** and I cherish the day the police will come to his home to throw the thief/crook in jail for the rest of his miserable life

Or how much more efficient would european policy be if there was one truly pan-european approach as opposed to every little european "province" doing their own thing????

I hope to God there is some hidden and sensible agenda for Mugabe's visit ... if not, it is time to diplomatically nuke Chirac and insist that the rest of the EU joins in. If he is really prepared to play cross-channel politics with Zimbabwe, the bloody minded arrogance and irresponsibility of the man is beyond belief.

Thom ... I've never understood this ... why does French culture need "protecting" from American culture? Won't French culture survive on its own strength and merit if it superior to the American equivalent (which in many areas it obviously is)? French anti-Americanism seems paranoid to me.
