DVD-rom won't play films
Discussion
Hi everyone. Yesterday i stepped into the 21st century and bought a dvd-rom for my PC.
It plays cd-s ok, and CD-ROM's, but when I try and run my newly-recieved DB7 GT DVD, it won't let me run it, saying I need a decoder.
Does anyone know what this is?? Do I need to install something else? I thought that just by buying a dvd that would be enough- why else would I have bought one??
Many thanks,
William

Hi.
DVD's just contain a datastream. This is encoded using the MPEG2 codec, and needs to be decoded to provide a picture.
An example of such a player might be WinDVD or PowerDVD - one of which is normally shipped with the drive. Did you have a CD or DVD come with the drive with these programs on?
There might be a free/cheap one available from Tucows, or download.com. It is also possible to acquire these things from various dodgy sources as well (Illegal tho
)

Are you using a NEC DVD drive per chance...?
Matt.

What software are you using??? cause i had to upgrade (new install) to the XP version of the software and everything fine now.
FYI:
Intervideo (WinDVD people) have an XP pack that you can download for very little money and then integrate DVD movie playback with your windows media player. Keeps you from having to fuss around with a different package for media...

I hardly ever use it (as a DVD player) so I don't want to spend money on it. I've got some sort of Zoran dvdsoft thingy but it's too old a version for a free upgrade from the MS or Zoran site

I run win2000. If I can run this on windows 2000 (rather then XP), then I would be very interested in evaluating it.
