Ungluing side repeater indicators on TVR - help!

This week.....I have been mostly mucking about changing the side repeater indicators to the clear variety on my Tuscan. And I mean, mucking about. What I thought would be a 5 minute job has followed the rules of Parkinson's Law and expanded to fill all time available. To complicate matters, the clear indicators supplied by TVR as a replacement for the OEM orange Ford Fiesta bits are a different size and shape to the originals. (but nicer than the Max Power Fiesta types sold in Halfords - I know, I have a pair of them too.)

Problem is, one of the original indicators was glued in place when the car was built. I've got the indicator lens off OK, but the rubbery gasket jobby that fits between lamp and car body is well and truly stuck onto the paintwork - and it's black!! When I fit the new clear indicator on, the black remants can be seen all the way around (doh!). I have peeled as much as will come off but the black layer stubbornly remains.

So question is......how to remove this hard glue without damaging the paintrowk beneath. So far I have tried.....methylated spirits, tar remover, cellulose thinners, T Cut. Nothing seems to be able to get underneath the layer of gasket stuff. Help.....its driving me mad!

Possibly need more info in the glue

I would try

rubbing it (I know this creates a mess but you do get the majority off)

then

Panel degreasant (nasty chemical from a car paint shop) used to remove any trace of grease from a car panel before painting (also called "panel wipe")

Go to your back street body shop and ask for a bit

Have you tried heating it up with a hair dryer? Can soften some adhesives and works on those stick on vinyl stripes.

Try nail varnish remover - but be careful, it may well remove some of the paint...

Echo the hairdrier idea...

Go the hairdryer route... takes a while, but it's the easiest way to do it... had this problem on my Fiat years ago... take your time, and don't be surprised if you're there for 15 minutes doing it!
