A letter has been sent home with my kids from their school today ...... (paraphrased)
"A neighbour has reported seeing a 'Black Panther' type animal in the field adjacent to the school late last night." ..... "A similar type animal has also been sited close to the school by a teacher at 07:15 this morning."
YOU FCUKING BET I'M WORRIED
The police have been informed but no further siteings. It's been advised we obviously not let children out to play alone and to supervise their journey to school.
I live in a semi rural village right on the edge of Southampton, there are open fields within 300yds of the house and the kiddies school (infants & junior) is about 500 yds the other way.
And I thought foxes were becoming more urbanised.

But in all seriousness, the Cornish have had this problem for years and I have yet to hear of anyone actually being harmed, the odd sheep but not a Human. What is it with the Southampton area, I was driving through a housing estate just outside Hedge End one morning and a bloody Deer walked across the road! GO CAREFUL,its a jungle out there!

Having been directly involved in a 'Beast of Bodmin' type incident I suspect it's nothing to worry about. In my incident what was reported as being a 6ft long black panther turned out to be a devon rex - an admittedly odd looking pedigree cat, but on the small size even for a domestic cat!

They are bloody weird looking, but hardly 6ft long. LOL

Bit hard to stuff a panther in the trunk of a Mondeo. Imagine cutoms:

Personally I think this has got to be bollocks. If there really was a large feline predator roaming around, the first thing getting killed off would be the local farmers livestock. (might get killed by food and mouth or BSE if it does)Easy feed for a panther etc as they cant run very far. After gorging himself on a few dozen sheep, going after kiddies would be too much hassle. Plus dont they usually avoid humans, esp human habitats, unless they real desperate.
But hey, like everyone else I wouldnt be taking chances with my kids.
I've spent a fair bit of time in Cornwall and whenever the Beast of Bodmin strikes they usually end up tracking down and shooting a particularly big fox.
I'd be surprised if there were any big cats loose as I don't think they have ever actually found one, (apart from one they knew had recently escaped). That said, don't take any chances.. You are at more risk if you stumble upon it so kids, not being the quietest of creatures are probably ok. Bells and so on on backpacks and bags should scare it off.. Works for bears in the States..

When I lived in Royston (Herts) there was supposedly a Black Cat wandering the Cambs countryside.
A few sighting in the Local Paper here and there but nothing spectacular.
One Sunday I was cleaning my dads car, heard a noise, looked up over the fence
FCUKING SHIT! Big black cat wandering across the bloody field! I saw it a few times that day. 
Saw it again in a field at dusk, couldn't see a thing except two eyes looking back, shone a torch in the direction, a black cat! Different area though, same cat? Who knows, but apparently they are everywhere...
I'm talking '94/'95 time here, so It could have moved down the country....
