Could this get legal?

I've noticed that images from which I've linked from my website aren't working.

I went to see if my site was down, it is.

I've tried to log onto my FTP server and not been recognised.

I went to the website where I purchased the domain for a total of 2 years and my domain is for sale. WTF IS GOING ON?

As you can tell I'm really not happy about this and I'm not prepared to pay more money to re-buy my domain which I have bought already.

I've had many witnesses who've seen that my site was online so they cannot say that I never bought it, I had in the region of 400 hits since the start of Jan when I bought the domain.

So could this get legal? and what do I do about it?

Did you get a form from Nominet to complete your registration?

No I didn't that's what I'm worried about, I kept checking back everyday to see if the domain was registered and one day it was, you could click it and it'd bring up my name and home address.

The company I purchased it off have been rubbish, I had to buy it twice because the 1st time I had typed in the expiry date of the credit card wrong and the card was declined, I heard nothing from them.

I purchased the domain and have still heard nothing from them, it is supposed to be confirmed within 48hours.

I know where you got your hosting and was going to get a domain from them. Looked at their site yesterday, and it is painfully slow. Dont think ill be using them.
oh and how about this for cheak. Bought a domain name just over 2 years ago, didnt use it for anything more than email forwarding, it cost me £25 for two years. I came time to renew it and they wanted £47 + vat + some other charge. I e-mailed them and explained that i only paid £25 the first time and that i could not renew it, and buy it again, for £28. They e-mailed me and said if i renew within the next 30 days they will give me a tenner off! whoopiedoo!
I thought I would register it again through some one else, but they have not 'released' it, so I cannot buy through anyone else!

This will tell you whether it's in your name or not.

Hmmm, looks like they're f**king you about. Have you tried asking them what's happened? They might have deregistered it by accident (not sure how though).

I would imagine it's an issue for trading standards if they've taken money for a service they didn't intend to provide.

Graham, there appears to be 2 issues here - but correct me if I am wrong.

You purchased a domain name for 2 years - that is one issue. The question is when did you buy it and who did you buy it from? a whois lookup says your domain is not registered (I assume www.grahamjyoung.co.uk?) and an Nameserver lookup also suggests this.

This is very unusual for a. co.uk domain when even after it has lapsed it can take a number of weeks (or months) for the domain to become available.

So your domain is available for purchase, next question is around hosting; domain name purchase and hosting are 2 completely separate things (most domain name purchases we deal with are "defensive" i.e. no-one else can buy them - but no website will appear).

It appears you have lost both, but this may not be the case if nominet have lost your domain records (which is unlikely but not unheard of) then your hosting company may not be at fault, if you purchased a domain and hosting from the same company I would suggest you look to them first.

This may also be a cock up from whomever you registered the domain with (could be same as above) - they could have done something with your zone file records that means your domain name doesn't "point" anywhere or they may have deleted the records completely.

There are a number of other problems that can cause this - if you want to mail me direct I may (or may not) be able to help you out with discovering what's happened - I'm currently technical lead on a project to move 40K active domain names from 1 co' to another co' and I'm not allowed any down time (which might also be what ur experiencing) so I've researched this area a bit.

Never been a good one for diplomacy myself (see my other thread). WTF is going on sounds good. OTOH it is midnight... maybe there's a few PH'ers less sad than us that can give you some pointers in the morning.

I'm stuggling to find out if 'my' domain name belongs to me. what site(s) can I look at to get confirmation that the site belongs to me, or a provider some other organisation.

I would say they've screwed you over on this one.

It either some dumb bint in a office pressed the wrong button, or they've screwed you!

tvradict - I noticed that when I punched it in on the website where I bought it from.

I hope I get it sorted to, I put alot of time and effort into that site and will not be best pleased if they have screwed me. Yeah it's only £20 (£18 odd I think) but still it's not the point, it's the principal of the thing.

Lets hope all is revealed tomorrow.

Well I rang up the company and the Credit Card was declined, nice of them to tell me

I've purchased the domain again so if on the next statement they've debited it twice then I'm going to be wanting answers.
