Found this link again and thought I'd share it.. Don't want to alarm people, but worth a read I think.. Only thing to add, keep your mobile phone by the bed charged and ready..

My Mum & Dad were in a hotel fire in Bavaria about 10 years ago.. both sustained serious smoke inhalation and my dad tumbled down a flight of concrete steps as there was no emergency lighting..
