Compressing Video Files

Hi.

What programs/methods etc do you use to compress video files so they can be posted on the net. Hopefully going to Virginia Waters this weekend, want to take some footage and post it somewhere.

Any ideas?

What kind of camera will you be using?

The camera is a Canon MV400i MiniDV.

Use something like Adobe Premiere 6, or Pinnacle Studio 8 or Roxio's Videowave, and create a wmv format, or mpg 1.

Yes I agree with Luca - Videowave (which I've used - I expect the others do to) has an e mail video format with 2 levels (quality and speed) which you use as a template to produce the file - seems ok - just had a go for the first time using that format.

...Or if you don't want to pay anything for the software, download Microsoft's Media Encoder fromt eh web site. The new media encoder does take a fairly "high horsepower" pc to give quick and good results thought...

Please, no *.wmv-format
You need to have Windows and Microsoft's spying Media Player for that.
*.mpg is just fine; it's platform independent

Flask MPEG will do MPEG Layer 4 - Divx.

I don't have a huge amount of cash as im at university, so what sort of price am i looking at for these programs?

Would the free Microsoft's Media Encoder that was mentioned do the job?

Pinnacle Studio 8 is £60, Premiere is several hundred, and Videowave is between £60 and £80 I think.

I've got both Videowave and Studio 8. Studio 8 is outstanding for the money. It allows you to do some pretty fancy things for bugger all money. And I managed to learn it in less than a day. Easily the best product for the money.

But as with all video editing, some serious hardware helps a lot.
